![]() so my favorite opening varies from game to game --from player to player -- but what does Not vary is I do not play something to "see how things go" -- I play something that reflects what I want. Consider this: at every phase of the game -- endgame, middlegame, opening -- and the transitions between middlegame and endgame, and opening and middlegame -- a strong player looks at the board and knows the kind of position he or she would like to play 2 or 3 moves from now. A strong player knows what matters most in playing his or her opponent and playing -- and creating -- the position-- and which opening is likely to generate the ideal battlefield. |

![]() As White I will often go for something off-beat, like a van Geet: fun-fun tactical play which nobody really knows how to handle well! Or the Sokolsky, which is like a van Geet on strategic speed, if you follow my drift - especially to the "nobody really knows how to handle that" part! Or an Italian Game - again with the tactics there and with a King's Gambit thrown in now and then for variation. Have also played the Bird, of course. And King's Indian Attack. And, against Sicilian players, I have recently discovered the unbound joys of the Sicilian Wing Gambit! Heh! That always catches them by surprise!! As Black, for a while I played the Latvian gambit a lot. I guess I really am a fan of tactics... And the Modern Benoni - which is indescribable in its wonderful dynamics! Elyhim did a great demonstation of that in a recent club game, here: gameknot.com The Jaenisch Gambit, of course. And the Budapest, occasionally. And the Two Knights Defense. And have considered taking the Benko out for a spin.... Used to play the Pirc a lot, in my younger days. And the Dutch. Think I will take up the Pirc again; it's less popular than it used to be For more quiet days, a Philidor or Caro-Kann will usually do the trick. |
