INTRODUCTION
I started playing when I was eight, my older brother never showed me any mercy. I played on a junior high school team during the time when Fisher was gaining his fame. I joined a local chess club in Lakeland, FL, in the late eighty's and have dozens of Chess Life (1990 era) magazines that I read, though not really study. One of my favorite GM is A. Alekhine {1892-1946}, although I don't play his style, I love his. I seem to make many blunders, on other chess sites maybe gameknot will slow me down and improve my game.

Hi everyone!
Thank you for letting me join. My name is Korstiaan, I'm dutch, but live in England. I've been playing chess for many years, but I've never really paid any serious attention to openings. This is about to change! If anyone has any good literature to suggest, please let me know.
And I'm always up for a challenge!

Cheers.

Hi
I'm Chuck; I'm currently a graduate student in Tennessee. I play the Sicilian defense a lot, though I'm trying to branch out for variety's sake. I prefer king pawn openings when I'm playing white. Anything else you want to know, drop me a line.

Happy Chessing.

Hello!
I live in the Midwest region of the U.S. A friend taught me chess sometime before I entered high school. We knew how all the pieces moved, but had no clue about openings. I joined the high school chess club, and learned a great deal about how to begin a chess game. When I have White, I play 1.e4; usually use the Morra Gambit vs. a Sicilian Defense. Against 1...e5 I like to play the Max Lange Attack or Max Lange Gambit. With Black, I play 1...e5 vs. 1.e4, using the Moller Defense against a Ruy Lopez. When I face 1.d4, I like to play either the Budapest Defense or the Dutch Defense. I own a copy of MCO-15 (Modern Chess Openings, 15th edition); message me if you want to know what it says about a specific opening or variation. Also, take a look at GameKnot's games database for ideas on what to play in the opening.

hello, thanks for welcoming me into your club. I'm familiar with "Chess4him" from the Yeshua's Army team. My favorite openings so far are the Sicilian, the Dutch, and the King's Gambit. My favorite chess player of all time would have to be Mikhail Tal. Anyhow, I hope to really learn alot!

Take care,

Hi,

I typically play e4 as white. However I have been playing c4 a lot lately, for something fun and different.

I almost always answer e4 with c6 and I typically answer d4 with Nf6.

I teach mathematics at a community college and I love to run.

G'day!
G'day everyone,

I'm Zal. I have been playing chess on and off for about 15 years. Over the years I have grown very fond of the Sicilian defence as black, especially Najdorf variation. I do not feel comfortable playing King's Gambit as white.

Currently, I am a PhD student in theoretical physics - which is why I have time to play chess   I look forward to learning from the many experienced players we have around here.

Cheers

My Intro
Hi,

I'm Harry, first of all, thanks for letting me join.

I am now semi retired and I am using some of my new found spare time to study opening theory. This is something that I should have done many years ago but sadly never got around to it. I'm currently studying 10 games based around the c3 Sicilian. I'm looking at these games primarily from the viewpoint of the white side. This is not completely foreign to me and I find that over the years I have faced variations of this idea, with mixed results, and without having really understood all the background theory. Once I have analysed all these games to my satisfaction I will move on to probably the French. Of course, if within the club we are currently studying something else, I'm quite happy to change course and join in.

My reason for wanting to join is that I feel that studying along with others, bouncing around ideas and engaging in friendly debates about the merits of various lines would be more enjoyable and satisfying than studying alone.

I should probably be looking for a club devoted to end games as this is certainly the weakest part of my game. The problem is that end games don't interest me and I therefore can't be bothered to study them in any great depth. This does of course mean that, over the years, I have accepted draws in games that I could perhaps have won and also I have resigned games rather than go to the trouble of reasoning out the end game. I have been playing competitive chess, in a mid week chess league, for many years. This has never made me into a great player, but I like to think that it has made me tough to beat.

Anyway, enough about me already. I look forward to getting to know you and discussing opening theories and strategies with you.

All the best

Harry

hello, my name is Robin, I'm much obliged for being allowed to join the club. I'm a busy guy but i do try to play as many chess games as i can. I'll look forward to offering suggestions through my somewhat limited chess knowledge; even more so, learning in greater detail about openings.

Hope to see you on the chessboard!

Hi everyone...
Hello,

Thanks for accepting me to the club! My Name is Scott Miller. I am glad to be a member.

My experience is basically a club and casual player. My strength is being able to calculate in complicated positions. I hope to strengthen my overall game.

I prefer 1.d4 as white. If you play 1.d4, then as black I respond 1...d5. I respond to 1.e4 with e6 (the French Defense). I am still studying the French through.

I look forward to the conversations.

Hey!
Thank you for allowing me to join this club and I'm looking forward to learning a lot. I've been
playing chess seriously for about 8 months now but had played before. As white I open with the
Ruy Lopez or the Smith-Morra. As black I play the Sicilian the Kings or the Dutch.

Hi, I'm Chuck (aka Chuckbo)
Glad to be here and talk about openings.
Since we're introducing ourselves ...

as White, I've been playing the King's Indian Attack since about 1976. I also picked up the
Nimzovich-Larsen opening in the mid 90s, and I think I'm playing that the most, now. I tend
to choose openings where I can limit the responses since I don't have so much time to study
and prepare. I wouldn't mind learning the Reti. Before I started playing the KIA, I used to play
the Scotch, and that's what I teach the Grade School / Middle School boys that I teach.

As Black, I used to play the Benko Gambit against d4. I tried the Leningrad Dutch and won
when I played it in the 90s, but it made me really nervous, and I gave it up. I played the
Queen's Gambit Accepted for awhile, again, to direct the opening my way. I've been playing
the Dutch Stonewall for the last couple of years and enjoying it and getting better at it,
though I just picked up a new book on the Benko and would like to get up-to-date with that,
too.
Against e4, I've played the Caro-Kann since around 1980 (I used to play the Schliemann
Variation against the Ruy Lopez and get creamed every time, and I used to play an exciting
but unsound defense against the Giuoco Piano but I beat A and B players with it when I was
still a C player). I especially like to play the Larsen Variation, though it's unsound and gets
evaluated as bad for Black, but I win a lot as long as I don't get nervous and stop attacking.
But I'm intrigued by Alekhine's Defense and would like to learn it someday, too.

introducing myself
I was familiar with chess from a very young age, but not knowledgeable. After getting a computer four years ago and playing with opponents on several sites, I realized that there was a lot I did not know because my opponents knew terms I was unfamiliar with such as "fork". I understood what it was, but called it something else. I just had played family members and a few ...very few!...friends throughout the years. I have to learn how to set up defences against opening moves. So glad for this chance to learn! Audrey

Hi everyone
I've been playing chess competitively for about a year now.
I usually play the King's Pawn Opening, I like aggressive lines that can come from the Italian
game like the Fried Liver Attack and the Lolli Attack. I respond t0 1.e4 with 1.e5,, but lately i
have been experimenting with with the Sicilian defense. I hope to learn more about chess
openings!

Hello
Hello everyone,
My name is Charles and I started to play chess more during the end of high school and now I am in college.
As black against e4:
Typically I go with the Najdorf but occasionally I will return with e5 if I just want to play something different.
As black against d4:
My main line is to return with Nf6 but quite often I will go for a stonewall defense because I find it a simple setup that works well at my level of play.
As white:
I almost always open with e4 and go to either a sicilian, ruy lopez, or giuoco piano.

Thanks for accepting me into the group

Hi
I joined this forum in the hope of formulating an understanding of successful openings.
I tend to open e5 or e6 and then work towards a fools mate that never happens.
I am fairly good at making the best of the mid game but feel I could do so much better if I had a clearer strategy from the start.

Looking at Chucks mail I must profess complete ignorance at the plethora of openings he sites.

Anyway thanks for having me and I will try to keep up.

Hi
Hi to you all, I'm Carl from Melbourne, Australia. I emigrated here from England about 6 years
ago, and have seen a different style of play here to what I was used to in the UK. In
Australia, chess tends to be less about deep opening preparation and more about tough
fighting play through the middlegame. There is therefore more reliance on lesser known
systems, and some risk taking over openings selections.

I have swung between 1.e4 and 1.d4 spending about 5-10 years playing one, then getting a
bit bored and shifting to the other. Currently I am trying to develop a repertoire based on
1.d4, that I'd be happy to share.

As black I've played a whole heap of stuff, but the openings which I think I have some
understanding of include:

1.e4 e5 systems
Sicilian Kan/Scheveningen and Najdorf

Semi Slav
QGD including the Tarrasch variation

At the moment, I'm putting a lot of research into:

Classical Spanish: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Bc5
Hungarian Defence: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Be7
Noteboom: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 dxc4
Marshall: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6 4.e4

I'll post some stuff about these openings and others, and am happy to be a part of the group.

Thanks

Carl

Excited to Be a Member of the Club
Hi everyone -

I have been a casual chess player for the last few years and have recently garnered a passion to develop my knowledge of the game and understanding of the game. I'm happy to be here and to be able to learn from much more knowledgeable and skilled players and hopefully to participate in the dialogue from time to time.

About Me: I love games. All games! and well, chess is the mother of all games so here I am. My favorite game, the game I've devoted the most time to, is poker, specifically no limit holdem. A lot of poker players are also chess players and its from them that I was exposed to the game and was able to really understand it outside of a total beginners perspective.

I usually open with kings pawn when playing as white, but there is something about the English Opening and openings that attack the center of the board from the outside that appeals to me. My opening play is not very informed.

Glad to be a part of this club and I look forward to learning and participating

From Bill aka Uranium Willy
Hi, I am Bill and just got accepted into the club. Got a little inspired to do something like this because I recently broke 1400 and have been holding in there for a while but am sinking fast as my opponents are tougher and tougher. But I must be doing something different myself and figured it was time to do something like this and I felt this club would be suited to were I am at these days as I seem to be grasping a little more the importance of getting off on the right foot and that in the beginning things are not as random as they look. Don't know what I have to offer but we can see. As Black have been trying the Caro-Kann for a while and have adjusted somewhat to the lopsided boards the defense typically create. Have begun trying the Sicialian as black but only on my 2nd game with it and I will have to stick with it - i.e. lose a lot- before I begin seeing some pattern I can relax with. Playing more Queen pawn openings with some success as white.

Just got a bunch of books and plan on beginning to read and study on my "real" chess board with The Art of the Checkmate by Renaud and Kahn, as was suggested by a high level player here at GK.

That is it. Glad to be on board.

Overall, no more useful book than Renaud & Kahn's ART OF THE CHECKMATE.

For early on your learning curve of the Caro, I suggest Joe Gallagher's STARTING OUT: THE CARO-KANN.

Great to Join You All!
Hi everyone,

I am an opening book fanatic and I love gambit openings.

As white I play e4 favouring the King's Bishop Gambit (1.e4, e5 2.f4, ef 3. Bc4!) Against the Sicilian Defence I play the Smith-Morra Gambit. Against the Scandinavian Defence I transpose into the Blakmar-Diemar Gambit. Against the French Defence I play the Tarrasch Variation. I am just learning to play against the Pirc Defence and the Caro-Kann Defence where I am looking at the Classical Variations.

As Black against e4 I am new to learning the the Alekhine Defence. I also play the Sicilian Defence (preferring the Najdorf), although given that white can avoid the lines I like (ie. not playing d4) I prefer the French Defence, which I have played for around 15 years. Against d4 I love to play the Benko Gambit.

My strengths, where I can help people, are in the King's Gambit and the French Defence. I also used to play d4 exclusively for around 15 years. I'm a bit rusty but I can help beginners out here especially with the Colle Defence.

I look forward to contributing to what looks like a great club.

Cheers,

Andrew

New member. My info-
I have a fairly large chess library. I captain team Full Moon Knights. My rating usually stays in the low to middle 1600s. When I get up to the 1680s and play others of that rating I usually go back down. My goal is to break the 1700 barrier some day. I am 67 years old and have played since I was 10.

I usually open as white with 1. c4 or with weaker opponents 1. Nf3. As black I see alot of 1. e4. I have been playing . . . e6 and then c5 going into Taimanov or Kan lines. Recently I obtained a copy of Fundamental Chess Openings (FCO) by Paul van der Sterren and have experimented with Najdorf for the first time. Against 1. d4 I try Bogo or King's Indian and occasionally Benoni. Against weak opponents I'll use Dutch once in a while.

I have been recommending Batsford Chess Openings and Gabor Kallai's 2 volume set of books for players getting started with books. I will now be adding FCO for slightly more advanced players.
