Cad's Team Forum Game
In my team, I've just restarted a game I run called "Cad's Endgame Challenge". Basically, what I do is post a specific board, give a few days for people to message me with their answers then post the results allocating points to those that got it correct.

I've decided to duplicate the game for the club, for as long as I have spare time to do so.

Not only am I going to be posting puzzles, but also will be posting chess advice / coaching tips. Mainly they are things that either I've read somewhere else, or picked up from somewhere. These are opinions, so many will disagree with them and that's fine, but I ask you keep this thread clear of any posts. The only way I can keep track of these games is if I don't have to scroll through looking for my last post.

Correspondence Chess - A How To Guide

Correspondence chess differs from OTB chess in that you have a much longer "thinking" time allowance. We also, especially on this site, play multiple games, with some players playing as many as 100 games at a time! Personally, I would find this impossible, my brain simply can't handle that many matches simultaneously. In fact, I can't play 2 games simultaneously without a lot of paper and a pen. I follow a few steps in every match I play to ensure I am able to play to my full ability in each game: -

1. On my move, before looking at any of my notes, take a look at the board and quickly jot down any advantages the opponent has. Jot down any advantages that I have. What was the purpose of my opponent's last move?
2. Read through my notes on the game. See if at any point I had predicted my opponent's move.
3. Make notes on possible moves, note down sequences and attempt to find the most beneficial one. Ensure that each sequence is taken at least 1 move beyond natural thinking. Make use of either an actual chess board or the Analysis Board on gameknot, this will help to visual the board and allow for easier spotting of weakened / strengthened positions.

Before you make any move, you should be asking yourself these 10 things: -
1. Are any of my pieces undefended or hanging?
2. On my opponent's next move, can he create a strong pin or exploit an existing one?
3. Can he fork any of my pieces (pay attention to pawn and N forks as they are easiest to miss).
4. Does he have any discoveries or double attacks?
5. Does he have any potential checks and if so, how do I meet them?
6. Can I sacrifice any of my material to open up lines for attack, create a strong initiative, mate my opponent, or win the material back with interest.
7. What is his most likely response to my threat, sacrifice, capture, check, or defensive move?
8. Would my move leave a previously defended piece exposed to capture or expose my K to a check I can't meet?
9. Would my move dangerously weaken my position?
10. Does my opponent have any surprise resources, including moves that superficially appear "bad", even to lose material, but which completely refute my attack or turn the tables on me?

Taken from Morozevich – Movesian, Sarajevo 2008

White to play. For Puzzle 1, I'm after a move that would gain a great advantage for white.

Closing date 18th January 17:00 GMT (13:00 Eastern US, 12:00 EST, 10:00 US Pacific etc) - The timing may vary but it will definately end on the 18th!

Got to be honest, the turnout for this was not so good. I suspect the problem was the difficulty in defining a 'correct' answer. Anyways, here goes.

The winning move was: -
1.Qe3 Black Resigns

Allowing for white to be up a knight and far better positionally. Sequence could've gone something like: -

1. Qe3 h5
2. Rxe8 Rxe8
3. Qxe8 Rd2
4. Ba1 Qf4
5. Be5
etc. . .

After that move sequence, the board would look like this: -

Answers suggested include -
1. Re5 Qd3
2. Qxd3 Rxd3
3. Re7 Rxf3
4. gxf3
etc. . .

After which the board would look like this: -

And : -
1. Bg4 Qxe4
2. Bxd7 Kf8
3. Re1 Qxe1+
4. Qxe1 Nxd7
etc

After which the board would look like this: -

I'm awarding a point for both the answers above, as although I don't believe them to be the best move they both gain something.

So, after Puzzle 1, the new table looks like this: -
[R][*]jonny1988 1pt
[R][*]rjacobs 1pt
[K][*]shivam15 1pt

----
Key
----
[↑] = Moved up on last posting of the league
[↓] = Moved down on last posting of the league
[-] = Stayed in the same position
[*] = New entry into the league
[K] = KINGKNOT'S CASTLING KINGS Team
[R] = riot ? what riot ? Club

Puzzle 2 Solution
I always liked puzzles like this! The automatic response for people, especially when blitzing, is to promote the pawn to a queen asap. In this instance, it'd be totally the wrong move to make, allowing Black to win the game in 3!

If you attempted the obvious response: -
1.b8=Q Qxb1+
2.Bc1 Qxc1+
3.Rd1 Qxd1#

Whoops!!

The correct move, was to "down-promote".

1.b8=N#

Simple! One move and mate!

A few incorrect answers out there, but mainly correct ones. Points awarded to: -
andrewbanks
blueearth
dav_0000
friki
jonny1988
rjacobs
shivam15
villiers (well done, answered 2 mins after the puzzle was posted!)
wurmt

So, after Puzzle 2 the table now looks like this: -

[R][-]jonny1988 2pts
[R][-]rjacobs 2pts
[K][-]shivam15 2pts
[K][*]andrewbanks 1pt
[K][*]blueearth 1pt
[K][*]dav_0000 1pt
[R][*]friki 1pt
[K][*]villiers 1pt
[K][*]wurmt 1pt

----
Key
----
[↑] = Moved up on last posting of the league
[↓] = Moved down on last posting of the league
[-] = Stayed in the same position
[*] = New entry into the league
[K] = KINGKNOT'S CASTLING KINGS Team
[R] = riot ? what riot ? Club

Looks like the riot club have been decimated by sheer numbers, although they do still hold 2 of the 3 top spots! Puzzle 3 to come soon!
