stealth-invader
Thanks, stealth, for your march entry.
It's always a pleasure to have an annotated game to read.

For use in the evaluation we usually also make a computer analysis. I have requested one for you. It will be available in this link: game

Runner up
Thanks for your comments, I am of course very happy with the runner up spot. I would also like to thank everyone involved in the judging as I realise that this must take up a considerable amount of your time.

One of the advantages of having someone else look over your game is that they tend to pick up stuff like missed mating chances. I am a great fan of the tactical puzzles on Gameknot, in fact I probably spend more time on them than on actual games. In this case though, I have still not found the solution. My view of puzzles is that they are good for your game but of course in a real game there is nobody to tap you on the shoulder and say, "look old chap, somewhere in all this mess there is actually a good move".

Would it be possible, for future competitions, to have a separate thread for each month? I haven't asked anyone else about this but for me, I think it would make the whole thing easier to read and follow.

new thread each month?
Thanks, clip, for your kind comments

As for your question about a seperate thread for each month? I would like to ask the other people here at the forum.

Yes, it would make each month's posts considerably shorter. But it would also give a lot of threads in the forum, and the way GameKnot notifies you of posts means, that people will not necessarily discover that there is posts in a new thread rather than in the old one. We had that problem already when I created this (current) thread for the 2013 GOM.

Any comments - anyone?

New Threads
Well, Scientist turned Science teacher so things in their right spot.....as opposed to safety glasses in the fume hood, liver in the sink and acid in the flammables cupboard speaks true to tipsy's heart. I would prefer a separate thread for each month, partially because a discussion on say blitzkov's super comeback can be quickly derailed by a new GotM post for the next month, like that scene from Chicago where Roxy's moment of glory is stolen by the next Jazz killer. It also makes reviewing past GotMs much easier if they have their own thread. As for the notification, yes GK may not put a nice shiny green number in your messages header (How cool is the new update?) for new posts in threads you have not posted in previously. But guess what? I LIKE that. I don't want to know about posts in some irrelevant side discussion about the price of tea in China, even if it is all aflame. (The thread not the tea.) Chances are there is a REASON why someone has yet to post in a thread...they don't care about it! For new threads, well, go to your Clubs and check out the yellow, any good club member should be doing this every log in anyway.

So all full ahead for new threads this year!

Cheers
TJ

PS Thanks Ruben, you and the GotM doyens have me all aflutter with that end-game feedback. One third of chess mastered now for the first two!   Seriously though that end game was pretty clear, only a promotion of pawn to Queen could yield Black victory so all I had to do was stop that. There was no chance of Black mating otherwise. No real variables to play with, for me, at the time, the endgame was perfunctory. Still, now I look back on the game, well, its like when you see a child do something ridiculously dangerous like perform a backflip on a scooter without a helmet on a concrete skating ramp. To a casual intelligent observer all they see is everything that could go wrong. To the child in the moment, without the wit to ponder such things, the manoeuvre is a simple matter of building up sufficient momentum then....FLIP!

:-)
Quite a tough encounter - a difficult endgame in which to realize must have seemed at the outset a big advantage, that would have felt as though it was getting smaller move by move. Did Black have to collapse in the end? If you haven't done so already, it might be instructive were you to annotate the thing: especially the plots, plans, schemes and scenarios that crossed your mind during the course of the play.

The ending especially - in my view that was a technically difficult win you pulled off. My first thought upon it was that, tired of defending, and with zero prospects of a win and problematical ones of a draw, Black simply overplayed his hand with impatience (or despair) and fell apart. This impression stands to be corrected!

Well done.
Cheers,
Ion

March Submission

multiple submissions
Just a reminder: if you make multiple submissions for a given month, then it's only the last submission which will actually enter the competition.

I was told my first submission counted toward February. This second submission is the one I want for March.

clarification
what I said is that the game qualifies for a Feb submission since it was in by the 10th of the following month...although when submitted, one can say which month it's meant for

March submission
game

Here is a very complicated game with many mistakes from both sides that resulted in a masterfully executed attack in the end.

Note to the judge(s): Move 38 was an oversight that only delayed mate one turn. Please don't be too harsh.

Tenessee's First March Submisison (non private)
Well, not a mod here, but far as I can see, TH's first non-private submission for March game may well have been submitted prior to the 10th of march but it was started (and completed) on 2nd of March. So I don't see how it could possible qualify for a Feb submission. Seeing as TH was mistakenly informed however that his original (non private) March submission I counted for Feb, by a mod, making it official advice, I would say he probably deserves an exemption to the multiple submissions rule as he thought he was making his first submission for March, and he should nominate which out of his two March submissions game and game he wishes to be considered for March's GotM. (Even though all up, including a private game, he has made three March submissions!   )
tipsyjourneyman
23-Mar-13, 00:55

Although
It should also be pointed out that andywm only informed TH that his 2/03/13 game COULD qualify for Feb (albeit mistakenly), not that it WOULD qualify for Feb. But seeing as we're not playing for sheep stations I still suggest TH should just nominate which out of his two March submissions he wishes to count for March and thereafter any subsequent submissions for March by TH will be subject to the normal rules of submission.

PHEW.

What a lot of split hairs there! Starting to regret posting anything!

I actually wrote a post yesterday apologizing to tennessee about the confusion - but I can see that it isn't here, so I must have forgotten to actually post it. Ah well.

Now, tennessee was clearly under the impression that his game qualified for a February submission, but when we looked at the games for February, we actually checked the dates for when the games were played - and that included all games submitted for both February and March up until to 10th. We concluded, based on the actual date for when tennessee's game was played, that it was actually a March submission, not a February one.

This means that tennessee actually has 2 submissions for March, and just has to choose which one he actually wants to submit - which I understand, from his last post, is his most recent submission. He is welcome to change his mind and submission - as are all of you - up until the deadline, April 10th.

Actually, andywm is the one who told me my game qualified for a February submission. Sorry for the confusion.

I'd like to change my submitted game to this one. I have such a good streak of games lately...
This game is part of the WTWLTR club stonewall-themed welcome mini-tournament, and I won the game by using an interesting sacrifice.

March game of the month competition.
I have attached my entry for the March game of the month. It has a Gameknot computer analysis and I have attached my own notes.

I'm afraid that it is not a very inspiring game, but I had no other real choices. I had hoped to present a better game, but sadly I lost the game I had in mind. I blundered my Queen! There was perhaps some life left in the game, but I felt that resigning in disgust was the only honourable thing to do. My only excuse is that I had been playing around with the analyse the board feature and got a bit too far ahead of the actual position. Would it be a good idea do you think, if the all knowing Gameknot computer could flash up some kind of warning when you look to be about to play such a move? "Are you sure you know what you're doing", or something along those lines.

Anyway, enough already, back to the game in question. I had thought about giving the competition a miss for this month, but then I thought it would be good to give the judges a little more to do, so I decided to submit one.

March GOM from id=Gandalfnefod
Here is my March entry for GOM. This game includes an interesting 8 move combination involving the sham sacrifices of knight and with check a rook. All of this results in a zugwang position which almost plays itself.

This game illustrates best why I love to play chess. The interplay of material and energy is fascinating. And when the material can be made to serve energetic ends, it is beautiful.

I give here my annotated version of the game.
