commanding submissionsBut where is good ol shamash when it comes to GotM submissions? Or did he submit in the previous months and I missed them? I'd love to see what he considers his best game for any given month. (lol ps I reckon actually most GotM submissions from everyone show a level of chess mastery the tipsy only dreams about after passing out over the board....if not most chess games played on GK! ) |

Interesting sacrifice which crushed my opponentgameknot.com I have seen this type of sacrifice a few times recently and was lapping up the opportunity to play it in this game. Enjoy - and please can it be considered for GOM? Alex |

Manic May game. I was lucky enough to bring home the bacon with the Ruy Lopez against a superior opponent once more. However I am submitting this game instead as a: It's a Latvian win to the Tipsy!!! b: Playing against a lower-ranked opponent AND employing the Latvian I was pretty sure of myself. Indeed VERY sure of myself. Until about move 19 Rb3, the beginning of what I later termed in the game chat, "One devil of a counter-attack". This was one of the most enjoyable games I've played this year, it took a monumental effort to eventually turn aside White's challenge and, though the match may be littered with errors by both players, I consider this one of, if not the best, victory of my less than illustrious chess career! I know higher ups will look on this as a tactical mess but I hope, in amongst all that, you each gain at least a tithe of enjoyment myself and my opponent extracted from the match. Cheers, TJ |

APRIL JUDGEMENT - tgunnI will post 1 result per day for the next 9 days, with the summary execution ... err, sorry, judgement on the 9th day. I have adjusted the point scale and its use, based on experience and feedback, which is why you may notice games receiving somewhat fewer points in total than before. This should make the differences between them stand out more clearly. In no particular order, the games up for judgement are: tgunn (1490) as Black vs. argomago (1681) = 0-1 game eyero5 (1497) as White vs. blueland00 (1502) = 1-0 game tipsyjourneyman (1361) as White vs. billdancourtney (1311) = 1-0 game blitzkov (1841) as White vs. romrychkov (1720) = 1-0 game stealth-invader (1340) as White vs. dmaestro (1467) = 1-0 game sonata296 (1541) as White vs. bigbudro (1632) = 1-0 game a_random_guy (1904) as Black vs. jstevens1 (1915) = 0-1 game darknite13 (1968) as White vs. trigon59 (1934) = 1-0 game miodrags (1396) as White vs. dgregoryn (1409) = 1-0 game ================================================================= APRIL JUDGEMENT: tgunn (1490) as Black vs. argomago (1681) = 0-1 game ================================================================= ECO: A04 [Reti: 1...Nc6] Opening phase (move 1-7): 5 +1 = 6 pts. Reminiscent of an inverse Pirc. I am subjectively adding +1 pt for an interesting, out-of-the-ordinary opening. Middle game (move 7-36): 5 +1 +2 -2 -1 +1 -2 +1 = 5 pts. GK flags 7...e4 as an inaccuracy, but I disagree: Black wants to preempt White's e2-e4 advance, which makes good sense: I am awarding +1 pt for good positional play. White's 9.Ne1 is a minor mistake: he would gain from exchanging in the center. Retreating to e1 leaves him with a very cramped position. Black's 12th move highlights the point of 7...e4: it wrecks White's center and kingside play and is worth an additional +2 pts. GK flags 14...0-0 as inaccurate, preferring Black to castle long. Which makes sense strategically as a pawn attack on his weakened kingside would be painful for White, and a rook on d8 would exert powerful pressure on the open d-file. I am not subtracting anything though, partly based on Black's rating but also because any kind of castling is strongly indicated when the position is as open as it is; the only factor permitting him to wait a little bit more in order to castle long is the disorganized state of White's forces. 14...Qd6 is a blunder however, which he is lucky that White doesn't catch (16.Nc4! Qxg3 17.Bxe3): -2 pts. Having already subtracted pts for the blunder, I am only going to take -1 pt for the follow-up: he is still overlooking it on his next move, and this time White catch him at it. White's tactics there are worth +1 pt though, so it evens out. GK labels 21...Rad8 a mistake, but the tactics involved would probably need an 1800+ player to find, so no subtraction there. He should, however, have seen the possible fork on g3, resulting from White's 22.Qf2. And to make matters worse, the move he chooses instead leads to the immediate imprisonment of his knight on h5: -2 pts. GK labels 30...Kh7 a blunder, but Black's position is hopeless anyway so I won't subtract anything for that. White's 34th move should, according to GK, have been 34.Bg5. A not very intuitive move (Why doesn't Black just take the bishop? A question I eventually asked Stockfish to solve for me). Turns out that 34...fxg5 is horrible for Black due to 35.Rf8+ Rxf8 36.hxg7+ Kg8 37.gxf8=Q+ Kxf8 38.Rf1+ Qf7 39.Rxf7+ Rxf7. I am not subtracting anything for not seeing that. White's 36th move is a horrible blunder however, which allows Black to turn the tables with an immediate mate-in-one, for which I am going to give +1 pt. Endgame (none): 5 pts. Level of play: +2 pts, based on the relatively not-too-high number of errors in the game. Overall: +2 pts for winning over an opponent more than +100 pts better than himself. Total: 20 pts. |

APRIL JUDGEMENT: eyero5APRIL JUDGEMENT: eyero5 (1497) as White vs. blueland00 (1502) = 1-0 game ================================================================= ECO: B72 [Sicilian: Dragon, 6.Be3 Bg7 7.Qd2] Opening phase (move 1-9): 5 pts. No errors. Middle game (move 10-30): 5 +1 -4 = 2 pts. Black's play, from move 13 to 16, is actually pretty nice and earns +1 pt to the game for good positional maneuverings. White's 21.g4 succeeds in intimidating Black enough to make 3 consecutive blunders, which shifts the balance of the game to White's favour. Though this does impact the overall impression of the game, it is interesting to see how threats like this can push opponents into a too defensive frame of mind, thus provoking blunders they may not otherwise have made. 24.g7 is a very tempting move. I understand why White did it; he just overlooked a single check... Because of the player rating I am not subtracting anything for that mistake. I am, however, subtracting -4 pts for the next 2 moves. I regard White as blameless in 27.Nd1, on the other hand, as calculating that 27.exd5 is better than attempting to save the knight with 27.Nd1 is, probably, beyond the power of most players this side of 1700+. End game (move 31-32): 5 +1 = 6 pts. In the end Black finds himself unable to escape the mate on h8 and resigns. I will assign +1 pt for the mate threat. Level of play: +1 pt, based on a rather high number of errors in the game. Total: 14 pts. |

APRIL JUDGEMENT: tipsyjourneymanThis is a relatively short judgment - but then, it was a very short game too. ================================================================= APRIL JUDGEMENT: tipsyjourneyman (1361) as White vs. billdancourtney (1311) = 1-0 game ================================================================= ECO: C00a [French] Opening phase (move 1-10): 5 +1 +1 = 7 pts. White correctly sees and draws advantage of Black's mistake at move 5: +1 pt. The tactical maneuvering focused on the exposed pawn on e5 earns another: +1 pt. Middle game (move 11-19): 5 +2 = 7 pts. White misses an interesting opportunity with 14.Qc4, but it may be just outside of his rating scale. No penalty. GK flags 15.Qc3 as a mistake, but White makes that move because of the tactical possibilities inherent in the bind on the knight, which is valid enough. The refutation is not so easy to see. No penalty. 17.Rhe1 is a fair attempt at gaining an advantage in the center. GK correctly flags it as a mistake - because an even better alternative is available; but the line given is far beyond White's rating. For that move and the tactical follow up: +2 pts. End game (none): 5 pts. Level of play: +2 pts. Black is at a clear disadvantage but still resigns far too early, especially taking into account that errors do happen. Total: 21 pts. |

APRIL JUDGEMENT: stealth-invaderAPRIL JUDGEMENT: stealth-invader (1340) as White vs. dmaestro (1467) = 1-0 game ================================================================= ECO: A45c [Indian: 2.Nd2] Opening phase (move 1-7): 5 pts. Black plays a rare variation on the Indian Defence and though the GK analysis does not as such flag any distinct errors, his pawn setup looks suboptimal; the only real point to 4...c6 would be to follow-up with either d6-d5 or e7-e5. Anything else makes little sense. Which means 5...e6 is suspect - from a purely positional point of view. The tactical point behing 5...e6 is to prevent bad things from happening after 6.Ng4 (when both knight and bishop would target the weak square on f7), but there are two other, good moves available with the same effect: the immediate 5...d5, or the preparatory 5...Nb6 after which developing moves like Bc8-g4 would be good. Still, it is difficult for White to draw immediate advantage from Black's somewhat passive setup. Middle game (move 7-17): 5 -1 +3 = 7 pts. GK flags 8.Bd3 as a mistake, preferring 8.Nxe5 d5 9.Neg5 h6 10.Nxe6 instead; a variation which is neither convincing nor within reach of the ratings involved. The far more reasonable (after 8.Nxe4 d5) 9.Bd3 dxe4 10.Bxe4 is still better than the game move however: -1 pt. Very nice knight sac leading to a mate: +3 pts. End game (none): 5 pts. Level of play: +2 pts. Nice, not too many errors. For playing an opponent more than +100 pts better: +2 pts. Total: 21 pts. |

APRIL JUDGEMENT: sonata296APRIL JUDGEMENT: sonata296 (1541) as White vs. bigbudro (1632) = 1-0 game ================================================================= ECO: B04j [Alekhine: Modern, Fianchetto Variation] Opening phase (move 1-11): 5 pts. No errors. You might argue, granted that g4 is already covered by the pawn on h3, that d3 is a somewhat better square for the bishop than e2 is (White's 9th move). But in that case Black could well follow up with 9...e5, with good play. White hasn't castled yet and the threat of f7-f5 and e5-e4 is quite real; Black gets powerful play in the center and the prospect of a good kingside attack. Middle game (move 11-29): 5 +1 +2 +2 +3 = 13 pts. White correctly sees and punishes Black's rather severe mistake, 14...Nd7 (blocking the last possible avenue of escape for the light-squared bishop), with 15.g4, capturing the bishop: +1 pt. The pawn advance, 20.f4, is fully correct. It wins decisive amounts of space on the kingside: +2 pts. 24.Bf8 is flagged as a blunder, and it is true that 24.Bg7 is somewhat better - though there's still no mate: 24...f6 25.Qh6 Kf7 26.Qxh7 Rf8 27.Bxf8+ Ke8 28.fxg6. In either variation Black is horribly lost though, and I will assign no penalty for choosing the game move, rather a bonus for a beautiful attack: +2 pts. White correctly finds and punishes Black's last, fatal mistake, 25...Kxf8: +3 pts for a very nice mate. End game (none): 5 pts. Level of play: +3 pts. Beautifully orchestrated attacking play with relatively few errors. Total: 26 pts. |

Ruben's GotM feedback5 pts. Analysis: In depth, accurate, instructional and insightful. Reasoning is clear and also serves as a valid feedback tool for us lower ranking players. 10 pts. Promptness: Given the number of games, the level of analysis and considering the final date for submission is 10th of (in this case) May, less than a month turnaround is fantastic. 5 pts Overall quality and feeling: The feedback from all the GotM judges this year (Can't comment on previous years!) has been of high quality and most appreciated. This is no exception. 5 pts. Bonus points for balancing judging with moderator duties, our club match and life. 5 pts. Overall: 30/30. I declare Ruben's feedback, GotMFotM (Game of the Month Feedback of the Month!) Congratulations! TJ |
