oh well Me I always say Glen McGrath, Shane Warne, Brett Lee etc never had to worry too much about a bad decision.....because if one chance was missed, there were three more shortly afterwards! Even Bowden had to get one in the end! You only stress about these missed decisions if you're not generating enough through the day. Well stumps was pulled up on time so, to bring this back to Chess, deadline for GotM June has passed. To those in it, all the best! Oh and after a turbulent 3rd day of cricket.....thank god for the precision of Chess! |

June Judgement #1: mousehound!Spoiler alert: I lead with the overview and then the score (vital statistics), before plunging into all the reasons why I awarded x points for y section. If you like to find out the score last, better speed your eyes over this first chunk of info and delve into the second! ********************************************************************** Overview: Begins as a King’s Pawn (ah, after me own heart), transitions to a Scotch gambit, (never heard of it) sets up a trap for Black’s Queen, springs it, slays a giant, a victory over an opponent +400 greater in rating! ********************************************************************** The Vital Statistics: Opening: 5 Midgame: 5 Endgame: 4 Level of Play: 5 Rating Difference: 8 Bonuses: 3 Penalties: 0 Score: 30 ********************************************************************** The Specifics: OPENING: King’s Pawn (KP), if ever there was a month to enter a King’s Pawn game in GotM, this was it. I think my love of e4 is well documented. If not, it is now . Opening was flawless, judged to finish at 9. O-O. Even GK’s miserly engine agrees, this was some solid play. Perhaps I’ve adjudged the ending of the beginning a little too early but it makes little difference considering the middle. 5/5 MIDDLE: Judged to finish at 31. Rxf4. Well, regardless of what that GK engine may say I couldn’t find any real flaw here, indeed I had to keep checking mousehound’s (MH) rating as I followed the moves, since I could not believe these were the moves of a 1228! It was everything White should do in a game, any game, but especially a KP, aggressive, captured the centre, dictated play, offered up exchanges (which I must admit, Black graciously accepted each time) and asked questions of Black each turn. Do that for long enough and eventually your opponent is going to come up with a wrong answer. 5/5 Which leads me to.... END. So 31....f4, the wrong answer! A blunder it may be but it would never have been committed if MH hadn’t been so dashing in his attack. One thing’s for sure if you can play a game at a slow tempo, unless you’re a brash player (like the TJ) you’re probably going to make the best moves each time. The same can’t be said for a fast-paced, attacking, whirlpool of a game. Now, there is a fair discrepancy here between GK and the moves made, but, well, there are few fans of the GK engine in endgames so I went my own way. Basically I asked, “Were the screws turned?” The answer....”No.” Given such a dashing middle the endgame was a touch abstract for me, beginning with 34. a4. We see in the end mousehound’s design with that move but to overlook Qa2 with the possibility of 34. Qa2+ Kh8 35. Rf8+ Kh7 36. Qg8# or 34. Qa2+ Kh7 35 Rf8 which demands 35...Rf6 seems to go against the previous theme of the game which was constant pressure. MH moves into a consolidation mode I think, nothing wrong with that, but for GotM standards it’s a 4/5. The real loss for this change of direction is in the bonus section. LEVEL OF PLAY: Despite the (slight) tarrying in the end game this was a majestic, aggressive, game worthy of a player in the 1500s at least (those with such rating are better placed than I to judge that) but for a 1200 how can you ask more? 5/5 RATING DIFFERENCE: A big scalp, +400 difference so 8 for rating difference. BONUS: It was an overall solid game, without any individually exceptional moves but the construction of the “Queen Trap” beginning at 27 Rf4. and ending at 32. Bxg3, well, if that’s not an interesting idea I don’t know what is! It was a string of 6 moves with extreme clarity, especially given the rating, so I’ll award 0.5 pt for each move, 1pt each move seems too extravagant, to bring it to +3. Unfortunately neither a mate nor a resignation to avoid impending mate, this is what I meant when I said the consolidation in the end game, despite being quite logical, cost MH points in the bonuses. 32. Bxg3 was certainly decisive but it was the final move of a sequence already awarded points and thus attracts no extra points. So +3 for bonuses. Penalties: No moves which lost points in this game. -0. Overall: 5+5+4+5+8+3 = 30 |

A story... (and beg pardon for the diversion)It was the first test of the last Aussie tour of New Zealand last century. About half way through the morning session, McGrath, having already bowled one short spell, was given back the ball. Can't remember who was facing him - doesn't really matter. Kiwi batters can't bat for snot anyhow. Except when it doesn't matter. McGrath was always an aggressive bowler, but on this particular day, he was feeling his oats pretty acute. Possibly it was the six that was hit off the last ball of his earlier spell. Taking his stand upon the boundary for the first ball, he came steaming in, arms going like the clappers, and let rip a snorter of a yorker. The batter backed up against the stumps, bat wavering in the direction of long on. With a loud thwack! the ball struck him on the pads plumb in line with middle stump. 'AAAAAAARGGH!' bellowed McGrath, which translates as 'HOWZAT!!' which in turn translates as 'How was that, Umpire?' Billy Bowden was unmoved. 'Not out.' he murmured. McGrath favours Bowden the sort of stare that one does when contemplating kicking someone across the street. But, sportsman and philosopher as he was, he recovered the ball, stalked back to the boundary, turned, and began his run-up. By the time he hit his delivery stride, he was going like Kingston Flyer, and, tall as he was, that ball was coming down at a hundred-plus miles an hour from a height of nine foot. A pearler of a delivery, a jaffa. Right on a length, a leg cutter that swung in and veered away off the track. A lesser batsman wouldn't even have seen it, but on this occasion there was a loud crack! as the ball caught the edge of the bat, veered further towards the off side to be swallowed by fourth slip. 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAArrrggghhh!!!!?' enquired McGrath. Mr Bowden stood stock still staring into space. This is cricketing sign language for... 'Not out.' By this time Glen McGrath was building up a head of steam. You could tell, as when he strode back to his run up, he picked up his sweater, carried it up against the boundary fence, and dropped it to mark the new run up. Then he began the journey back. At the delivery stride the Kingston Flyer would have been a speck in the rearview mirror, his arm a blur, and the ball a red streak aimed at a spot just to left of the batsman's feet. It seamed off the track, a golden off-cutter, and the middle stump went cartwheeling down deep fine leg. McGrath turned to Billy Bowden. 'You gotta admit,' he said, 'I nearly got him that time!' |

June Judgment #2:sonata! game Spoiler alert: I lead with the overview and then the score (vital statistics), before plunging into all the reasons why I awarded x points for y section. If you like to find out the score last, better speed your eyes over this first chunk of info and delve into the second! ********************************************************************** Overview: Begins as a Queen’s Gambit (I do love a gambit), assassinates all of Black’s developed pieces in a series of exchanges which sets up a brilliant middle that leads to an endgame featuring a deadly march of Kingside pawns. Eminently enjoyable! ********************************************************************** The Vital Statistics: Opening: 5 Midgame: 5 Endgame: 4 Level of Play: 4 Rating Difference: 2 Bonuses: 7 Penalties: -3 Score: 24 ********************************************************************** The Specifics: OPENING: Queen’s Gambit. I love a good gambit, or even a terrible one! This, of course, is an example of the former. Measured to move 14 I could find no flaw indeed quite the converse: there was a cunning set of exchanges from 10-13, which I shall talk about later in the bonus section, that were thoroughly impressive. 5/5 MIDDLE: (Measured to 39) Patient, meticulous and brilliant, sonata gains a mere +1 material, but in doing so loads up his Kingside pawns like Clint Eastwood loading rounds into a six-shooter, with similar results. 5/5. END. Bang, bang, bang! To see those Kingside pawns march inextricably up the board, whilst the Rook stands sentinel, was a thing of beauty. In carrying out his endgame surely sonata must have felt a modicum of the joy experienced by the Duke of Wellington, though he was just Arthur at the time, when he stood in his stirrups and indicated the general charge against the routing Napoleon forces at the end of the decisive battle of the 100 Days. Unfortunately a missed mate, well two, the one at 46 I dismiss given sonata’s rating, I certainly would not have seen it if GK hadn’t pointed it out, but to miss the mate of three moves at 50 was a pity. And unfortunately costly. 4/5. LEVEL OF PLAY: Deserved a 5 but the missed mate shifts this game from the “exceptional” category of 5 to the “outstanding, very few or no errors” category. 4/5 RATING DIFFERENCE: +182 so 2 pts. BONUS: 19Rc7 plants a powerful piece in a strong position which is pivotal in the victory +2. Probably an overvaluing of this move but hell I’m the judge and I loved it! Moves 10-13 overall sacrifices a pawn but has drawn all Black’s developed pieces into a series of exchanges from which White comes out the stronger. Truly it looks like a night of long knives which removes all possible opposition to White’s eventual victory. +1 The middle game which finishes with the position at 39 was brilliant, the inextricable march of the pawns in the subsequent end game was a thing of beauty, all the more so considering the tiny disparity in material to White, +3 overall for the majestic combined middle and end. Resignation forced by mate threat: It was mate in 5 so +1. Overall Bonuses: 7 Penalties: Missing a mate of 3 was a damn shame. -3 Overall: 5+5+4+4+2+7-3 = 24 |

June Judgement#3: miodrags! game Spoiler alert: I lead with the overview and then the score (vital statistics), before plunging into all the reasons why I awarded x points for y section. If you like to find out the score last, better speed your eyes over this first chunk of info and delve into the second! ********************************************************************** Overview: A serviceable Sicilian, miodrags’ opponent finally crumbles under the solidness of miodrags’ play, blundering at the last and the murderous miodrags pounces! ********************************************************************** The Vital Statistics: Opening: 4 Midgame: 4 Endgame: 5 Level of Play: 3 Rating Difference: 0 Bonuses: 2 Penalties: -1 Score: 17 ********************************************************************** The Specifics: OPENING: The dastardly Sicilian! Bane of King’s Pawners everywhere! The opening, (1-14) was actually a bit proppy once White gives the best response of 2. Nf3. By 14 GK engine has Black at -3 but, material wise -1 which is odd for a defence that is meant to be solid. Adjusting for ranking however decided not to be too harsh. 4/5 MIDDLE: Solid again except for the bizarre move at 16....Nb6 where, after forking Queen and Knight, Black doesn’t snap up the Knight. 4/5 END: If your opponent is going to blunder at the last then all you can do is capitalise! But of course the blunder is only brought about by Black giving barely an inch in 47 moves, here miodrags reaps what he has sewn masterfully. 5/5 LEVEL OF PLAY: Good game, entertaining and relatively few errors. 3/5 RATING DIFFERENCE: 0 pts. BONUS: +3 for a forced resignation, White is dead as a duck. A dead duck. Obviously. PENALTIES: -1 for not following through after the Knight / Queen fork. Overall: = 18 |

June Judgement#4: ionadowman! game ********************************************************************** Overview: A Majestic Modern Benoni without flaw that leads to the inevitable mating of his opponent. I always love the elegance and near-perfection, if not perfection, of Ion’s games. This is no exception. However, the surprise is actually that an opponent of much lower rank can hold off the always impressive ionadowman for so long! ********************************************************************** The Vital Statistics: Opening: 5 Midgame: 5 Endgame: 5 Level of Play: 5 Rating Difference: -10 Bonuses: 5 Penalties: 0 Score: 15 ********************************************************************** The Specifics: OPENING: The Modern Benoni...which is well beyond my ken, I’m not even acquainted with the Classic Benoni! However I know a flawless opening when I see it, and so does GK. 5/5 MIDDLE: Characteristically without error. 5/5 END: I imagine that playing a high-ranker like Ion is akin to walking a tightrope without a net....one slip is all it takes! Here the opponent makes two in a row! The error at 33 gxh5 and ionadowman opens up the door with 33...Kf1, then rampages through with 34...Rg8+. Mate swiftly follows. 5/5 LEVEL OF PLAY: Exceptional. 5/5 RATING DIFFERENCE: At time of judgement opponent is -545 points lower than the celestial rating of Ion, leading to whopping -10 penalty! BONUS: +5 for mate. Interestingly, at 40, GK suggests mate in 4. I’d like to know that combo, I’d move Qe5+ as well. The lowly tipsy couldn’t find the 4 move mate that’s for sure! PENALTIES: 0 Overall: = 15 |

I think...I pretty much figured the rating difference would knock a dent in my application, but it's clear others outscored my game even without that - and good on them. But I quite liked that game against ezogelin - it was a deal tougher than it might appear looking through the score. So I submitted it just so that it was 'out there'. For the eventual winners of the June GotM: well done! And of course, my thanks to the judge, typsyjopurneyman. |

June Judgement#5: a_random_guy! game ********************************************************************** Overview: King’s Pawn meets the French Defence. And completely destroys it! Beautiful to watch. ********************************************************************** The Vital Statistics: Opening: 5 Midgame: 5 Endgame: 5 Level of Play: 5 Rating Difference: -4 Bonuses: 13 Penalties: 0 Score: 29 ********************************************************************** The Specifics: OPENING: Ah another King’s Pawn! Opponent replies with the French Defence but ARG is clearly at home against this and moves is pieces flawlessly, culminating in a nice flurry of moves from 14 Bb1 to 18 Bxd3. In my limited experience playing as White against the French I found my pieces being sucked too high, leading to over-extension which Black then exploited. My only victory against the French came from playing (surprise surprise) an unorthodox line. Here it is Black that gets sucked too high and overextends, much to their detriment. 5/5 MIDDLE: Begins with the bold move 19 Rc7, now, with Black’s forward pieces destroyed, White springs into Black’s rear ranks with joy, tearing Black’s queenside to ribbons whilst causing a separation in Black’s kingside pawns. A slashing middle that fills ol Tipsy’s heart with glee. 5/5 END: With the business done on the left flank, White rolls its pieces over to the right, mopping up the divided kingside forces so as to leave no opposition to victory. Its army destroyed, mate impending, Black resigns. 5/5 LEVEL OF PLAY: Exceptional. 5/5 RATING DIFFERENCE: At time of judgement opponent is -249 points lower than the impressive rating of ARG, -4 penalty. BONUS: +5 for resignation forced by mate. 14-18 Combo in the opening +1 (would be more but for the rating of ARG), 19Rc7 +1, Middle game destruction of queenside +2 (again the rating is preventing me from awarding even more), End game mopping up of kingside +2. General slashing, enjoyable nature of game and dominance of opponent: +2. Total Bonuses: 13 PENALTIES: 0 Overall: = 29 |

Announcing June Game of the Month WinnerFive excellent games and all submitters are thanked but a great game against a giant of an opponent gets the mousehound home. Perhaps he'll have to rename himself staghound after bringing down an opponent 400 pts his greater! Very special mention to a_random_guy whose submission was my personal favourite. I enjoyed my time as judge but have even more respect for the regulars as it is a LOT of work....and I only had five to judge!!! Cheers to all and congratulations to mousehound! TJ |

@porchoOriginally posted by rmannstaedt What are the rules? * The game must have been played on Gameknot. * The game must be recent - that is, it must have concluded in the current month. * The game must be submitted for entry no later than the 10th the following month. Considering we are the August 9th, I assumed you wanted to submit a game for July just before the deadline. My mistake! (I didn't see your previous july submission.)
