so now i'm confused.
which game of porcho is being judged for 'July' ???.

@brigadecommander
If blitzGame.allowed = true then
porcho.submission = gameknot.com
else
porcho.submission = gameknot.com
End if

The question here is whether Blitz games are allowed or not. I don't even know for sure. Maybe rmannstaedt or tennesseehiker could clear this up.

(Personnally, I would not allow blitz games, but I'm not the judge here...)

blitz games in GOM
My preference is to actually allow blitz games. I mean - it's chess, ain't it? I would expect a blitz game to have a somewhat lower quality/more errors, as the players have less time to think about the moves, but on the other hand this can lead to fun/interesting/outrageous situations too. So yes, I would allow them.

I don't think I would cut them any slack in the evaluation though; if it wants to be rated along with the correspondance games, then it has to be able to stand up to them quality-wise. But they would probably score points on the "interesting/fun" scale

PS: blitz (part 2)
However - the question may be moot - I just read a post stating that we cannot link to blitz games. Now, if that is the case, then blitz games are not allowed. Being able to link to GK games is an absolute requirement and one I am not willing to void; it is the only real way we can make certain that the game has actually been played here and with those exact moves. No link, no game!

good decision
A good game is a good game, no matter how long or how short a time it took.;www.youtube.com

We can't link it
But it is possible to provide PGN for the game. Then you just have to plug the PGN into the practice board and voila you have the blitz game.

annotated blitz games
Sorry, a PGN won't work. It will have to be a link. However, I notice that your earlier post had a link in it to an annotated version of the blitz game.

Now, in principle a link to an annotation is ok and can be accepted. BUT there is a problem: we use the GameKnot analysis engine to generate a rough analysis of the game; it is a significant time saver for the judges. Without the GK analysis, the workload simply explodes.
For that reason, I am going to say that it is *entirely* up the judge for that month to decide, whether an annotation link is acceptable as an entry or not.

This means: you are welcome to submit an annotated blitz game, but it may not be accepted - at the sole discretion of the judge for that month. So I recommend submitting an alternative game as well (just like you did).

i don't use the
gameknot analyzer. It only has limited tactical usefulness. So all i need is the moves really. Today was the final day for submissions correct? I will have my decision before the 13th. I count 5-submissions so far.Is this correct?

Didn't win at all in July but I thought I played decent vs 71 ranked GN player....can't believe I'm submitting a loss but thought I played well. Sicilian def but in the end, couldn't quite match white.

blitz & verifications
No Tipsy, unverifiable blitz games are not allowed in the competition. But correct me if I am wrong: it is not possible to annotate anything except games you have actually played here on GK, yes?
In that case, annotated blitz games should be ok, if the judge for that month allows it.

Consider yourself (humorously) corrected.

*laugh*
Very, very nicely done tipsy!

Yes, I stand corrected. Annotations are not proof that the game was played.
Which means, unfortunately, that blitz games are a no-go in the competition, unless and until we find some other way of verifying such games.

i have finished the Judging and have the result. Will submit tomorrow.

he he he he
Yeah thought you'd enjoy that one Rmann!   There is no way to verify a blitz game, an annotated game in and of itself, if it did occur as a non-blitz match can actually be verified against a player's past game history as I mention in this previous post:

"What is past is prologue
Hi julio, I have gone through your previous GotM submissions and have realised this is what has been happening, or at least what I think has been happening:

1. You post a link to the annotated game
2. The judges then must go into your past game history, find the corresponding game, with its corresponding computer analysis.
3. The judges then use this computer analysed game in their judgement.

That's a lot of effort on the judges part!!!! "

found on page 6 of this forum:
gameknot.com

but Blitz games, they are to unverifiable as the Tipsy's Awesomeness is to verifiable!

July GOTM Results.
Honorable mention goes to the following games;

.

1. exsplosivepianos for a very strong and well played miniature ;gameknot.com?.

2.andywm for his brave and valiant struggle against kikursus(2441)game

And the Winners are; 1st place goes to random-guy for his fine example of the stonewall attack. I really liked this game!!!;game 2nd place goes to .stealth-invader for his exciting and efficient Kingside attack..... ;game
3rd place goes to Tennesseehiker for a nice positional struggle that contained some very nice finesses;gameknot.com.
each game was gone over 4-times. I concentrated less on errors and more on the drama of battle. Like a good movie. Some of the best Master games are a comedy of errors, yet remain in ones memory like a fine wine!!!

Back
After a wild summer, I am finally feeling well enough to enjoy this once again. Don't really have a great game for this month, but I do have a nice come from behind victory in which I blundered early and dropped a minor, but through strategic play (and a few blunders from my opponent) I was able to capitalize, even things out, and force a resignation victory (Which I feel was way too early to do).

game

Allow me to explain the dropped minor, I was looking ahead so many moves that I messed up logically in terms of going back and figuring out what I wanted to do. This has happened in a few of my games here and the only way I know to counter it is to play the game out on a real board and physically write down my moves. I know the online element is quite different from board play but this way allows me to see much more of what's going on and develop strategies.

Adventurous August
Well another month another Latvian victory to Tipsy....but I was playing as White!!!! Can't show my lovely Latvian to be flawed now can I? So instead it's this inspired Damiano Defence against fellow KoH porcho who was enterprising enough to join in on a "worst defence" pair of unrated games, can't wait to see what he'll do as black! This is how my love of the Latvian began with an ol sparring partner billdancourtney sending me a similar pair of unrated challenges.

So without further ado the game

Enjoy your last days of Summer Northerners, I, for one, will be glad to be rid of Winter!!!!

Cheers,
TJ

"This is 'odds-giving' style - in effect White is offering Queen odds. Play at odds is very rare these days, which I think is a pity".

Not that this is my best game, but it is a good lesson in do and dont,s in a game.
It also shows how big the difference can be between 2 players.

Ok
Here's one, but it's for the month of July. Not only does this annotation involve the game of the month, but it is based on the most important and instructive game for me of all time. And, that's why it is epic and historic. On that ground, I decided to annotate the game, eventhough I forgot the actual position (what was played.) Why? This game was too important to skip the annotation. Now, I rarely annotate a game, unless I can remember almost everything that was played, but this was the exception. In the past, despite all the improvements and not resigning, I never gave a huge amount of thought, until this point. But, the moral of this game is that you have to think ahead, and not just move by move. That's because this is a game that I should have won when I won his Q for one of my R's. But, blundered and turned an easy win into a loss. How did I do this? Well, I failed to exchange important material as one of his pieces was pinned. And, it actually would have won a R for one of my Bishops. That mistake led to my ultimate downfall.

MAY COMPETITION - RESULTS
With apologies for the delay, the results of the May 2013 competition:

Judge: easy19

GOLD: game by a_random_guy
For me this is the best game; just a nice setup of pieces, lot of movement, not too many mistakes and an excellent check mate on the board: a mate-in-9, and to see that at that level is remarkable.

SILVER: game by ionadowman
What can I say? Excellent game again by ion and verdantgarden. Good positional play, a few tiny errors, too bad they didn't play until the end.
I give it a second place.

BRONZE: game by tipsyjourneyman
A huge amount of mistakes, but a nice forced checkmate in 5 moves and played until the end. And the opening moves were quite nice.
So i give it a 3rd place.

Honourable mention: game by blitzkov
Nice start of a game, well played by both players. Several mistakes from both sides, but after all a nice game with mate in 6 moves at the end; too bad it didn't show it on the board.
A 4th place.

All the other games were nice but with some openings not too good, loads of mistakes, or just a bit dull in the midgame. Resigning games or timing out games will not give you a good score, so that is also the main reason they didn't make it in my top 4.
