My actual game of the month entry game As I have currently exceeded my limit for computer analysis games (did some favors for some friends here), I cant actually get a computer analysis done. Hopefully I don't lose brownie points for this |

AUGUST JUDGEMENT: porchoThe August entries, in order of appearance: porcho (1251) as Black vs. stealth-invader (1390) = 0-1 game thebullet00 (1994) as White vs. sercarp(1956) = 1-0 game tipsyjourneyman (1376) as Black vs. porcho (1345) = 0-1 game miodrags (1450) as Black vs. lancelot44 (1583) = 0-1 game darknite13 (2059) as Black vs. icyfrog66 (1898) = 0-1 game brigadecommander (2270) as Black vs. dynamic_dv (2269) = ½-½ game Additionally, easy19 also submitted a game and even made a very nice annotation for it: gameknot.com However, that game was actually played in July and thus ineligible for the August competition. It was a good game though, and it is rare to see an odds-giving game these days. It gains a solid "honourable mention". ================================================================= AUGUST JUDGEMENT: porcho (1251) as Black vs. stealth-invader (1390) = 0-1 game ================================================================= ECO: D00a [Queen's Pawn Game] Opening phase (move 1-8): 5 pts. White plays the opening very defensively, ceding the initiative to Black almost immediately. Black could have played more precisely (7...Qa5), but handles the opening competently for his rating even so. Middle game (move 9-41): 5 +1 +1 -2 +1 = 6 pts. Black immediate seizes the opportunity afforded by White's mistake at move 13 (+1 pt). I am not subtracting anything for Black's inaccurate 17th move, even though castling is generally good for you and Black should have done so as soon as expedient. However, centralizing your pieces is also a generally valid strategem, and you have to look rather deep to see that White actually has some fair counterplay in the situation. Likewise I am not subtracting for Black's mistake at move 19, though GK (correctly, I think) flags the immediate dissolution of White's pawns in the center as a better plan than play on the open c-file. When you are ahead in material, it is generally to your advantage to open as many files and lines as possible. Bonus point (+1) for taking advantage of White's blunder in move 20. I am, however, detracting 2 points for missing several not-too-difficult mate opportunities at moves 23, 25, and 26. The overall impression of the middlegame gains another (+1) bonus: the whole game turns out to hinge around the weakness at e4 which White created with his 7th move. The game, overall, is a very instructive illustration of the danger of creating such a weakness in your pawn structure. Endgame (none): 5 pts. Level of play: +2 pts, based on the relatively not-too-high number of errors in the game. Overall: +2 pts for winning over an opponent more than +100 pts better than himself. Total: 20 pts. |

ratingsFirst of all: get yourself a glass of your favourite beverage. I find whiskey or a good red wine works best for me, but your taste may differ. Take a sip of it and then, while the taste of it still lingers on your palate, open the game you are about to analyze. You may notice - and this is where the beverage comes in - that there are a couple of links to the players involved. Now, using your finely honed judging skills you carefully memorize the name of the opposite player, the colour of the game, the number of moves, and the date when it was finished. Keep those things in memory, mixed in with last wafts of the drink you tasted, and if you did it right, then you should be able to click on the name of the player and open his personal page. There, with a bit of luck and possibly an extra sip from your glass/cup/jar/tankard, you may find his 'past games history'. Click on it, and if the force of your beverage be with you, a list of games will suddenly appear before you! You will have to hurry now, for if you wait too long the list is likely to disappear! So quickly, before it can defend itself, breathe out some of the fumes from your mouth to keep it befuddled for a few moments while you scan down and seek out the entry for the game. If you do it right, and if you still remember those things from before, then you will find the game in the list along with the actual rating at the time it was played. However, do not be too disheartened if you fail. This is one of the deep secrets of the trade and many are the judges who have spent months, even years, trying to learn it! |

AUGUST JUDGEMENT: thebullet00AUGUST JUDGEMENT: thebullet00 (1994) as White vs. sercarp(1956) = 1-0 game ================================================================= ECO: C58g [Two Knights: Morphy, Colman Variation] Opening phase (move 1-10): 5 +2 = 7 pts. An uncommon, very sharp opening choice which demands absolutely uncompromising play from both players. Made me sit up and take notice! GK claims White to have the advantage out of the opening. However, out of the 8 games with that position (after 10.Nc3) in my master games database, White succeeds in claiming a single draw only. So I rather believe Black to have more than sufficient compensation. Middle game (move 10-26): 5 +3 +1 +1 = 10 pts. The tactical complications after move 10, and especially (Black's) nice pawn sacrifice at move 11, earn the game a +3 bonus. Black is putting White under a lot of pressure, and White is fending off threats as quick as they come. White's defensive maneuver, 16.g4, earns another bonus point. It completely breaks open his own kingside defences, but it is the only way to defend the knight. Black's blunder at move 20 is based on a misappreciation of his chances. Yes, White's kingside pawns can be annihilated, but White has sufficient defensive resources at his disposal even so; the bishop sacrifice is, unfortunately, not correct, as White's 24th move proves (another +1 bonus). End game (none): 5 pts. Level of play: +4 pts for an outstanding performance! Total: 26 pts. |

Also, I want to remind you all: there is actually a prize coming up in this competition. At end of year (after nominating the december winner), I will be judging all of the *winners* for this year and picking the Game-Of-The-Year. The lucky winner of that title will receive an actual chess book as a special prize, mailed to his/her address wherever that may be. |

Hey speaking of posting things internationally I have a new method of planning your next OS vacation. Which is to follow the path taken by some exotic item sent by so called "priority international courier" on ebay. I ordered a typewriter from the States, it begin in Honolulu, as close you can be to Oz and still be in a state of the US, (unless the western tip of Alaska is closer but I doubt it) a fortnight ago. It's since travelled in the wrong direction to Tennessee, (hey maybe I should have gotten tennessee hiker to pick it up! ) , Kentucky, Ohio, Minnesota and now is in.....Alexandria! Well at least it's left the States. Hopefully the whole situation over in Egypt doesn't hold it up further. But I tell ya what, right now, jealous of my jetsetting typewriter! |

AUGUST JUDGEMENT:tipsyjourneymanAUGUST JUDGEMENT: tipsyjourneyman (1376) as Black vs. porcho (1345) = 0-1 game ================================================================= ECO: C40a [Open Game: Damiano Defence] Opening phase (move 1-10): 5 +1 = 6 pts. Based on sheer novelty value I am giving an extra (+1) point here for an exotic and (rather probably) not-very-correct opening. I also rather like the idea behind the game: challenging other players to a match of suspect openings. It strikes me as an interesting way of exploring the whichness of the why of opening theory. White's 7th move is a mistake - the simple 7.Be2 would give White a clear advantage: the pawn on f6 blocks the logical development of the knight while weaking the kingside defences, and the position of Black's queen, square in the center, is going to cost significant tempi to rectify. As it is, Black survives the opening and enters middle-game with a slight plus. Middle game (move 10-18): 5 +1 +1 = 7 pts. Adding a point here (+1) for nice piece play: the White king is locked into the center, and Black's bishops are dominating the game. Yes, GK evaluates 12...Bh6 as an "inaccuracy", preferring 12...h5 instead. But one has to take the opponent into account too; the whole idea of posting the bishop on h6 - with the immense pressure it exerts on White's king after he castles long and g-pawn has advanced to g4 - is well conceived. An additional point too for the sudden death at move 18. End game (none): 5 pts. Level of play: +3 pts for a good game with a relatively reasonable number of errors. Total: 21 pts. |

Thanks Ruben! 7. Be2 Qb4+ 8. c3 Qd6 9. Bd2 (White is continuing to keep powder dry by preventing the exchange of Queens and now both bishops have been developed) From here there are a plethora of moves for both sides but it seems a level playing field and Black has drawn its Queen back to its lines, even if it's still forward of its pieces. (Like my exemplified use of its and it's in that sentence? ) Anyway splendid work once more! Cheers! TJ |

game Off the top of my hat, on 7.Be2 Qb4+, I wouldn't do 8.c3 but 8.Nc3, like this: 7. Be2 Qb4+ 8. Nc3 Qd6 9. Qxd6 Bxd6 10. Nb5 Ne7 11. Nxd6+ cxd6 12. Bf4 and White is much better developed, with initiative and wonderful lines of attack... Though quite possibly the simple 7. Be2 Qb4+ 8. Nc3 Qd6 9. O-O!? Qxd1 10. Rxd1 is even stronger. |
