Rowling v Tolkien
Can any argument be made that Rowling's work is equal to or better than Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy?

Hmmm...
Tolkien is the better writer, but I like Rowling's work better.

One Difference
It seems to me that one difference is the comparative complexities of the two author-created worlds. Although both authors have created fictional geography, fictional languages and fictional history and cultures for their respective worlds, Tolkien's seems deeper and more complex. For example, where Rowling might invent an ancient word or two for a spell utterance, Tolkien creates entire poems in Elven tongue.

True.
This is in part why I believe Tolkien is the better writer. But, in some areas, Rowling goes into more depth and complexity than Tolkien. For example, Rowling chooses to spend lots of time delving into her characters' backgrounds, while Tolkien does not.

Another thought
Rowling was targeting a younger audience than Tolkien. She targeted all ages, but mainly ages 8-13 (this is my roughly estimated guess). However, she knew it would appeal to all ages--as seen in my case.   Tolkien targeted an older audience, although not by far, as seen in his style of writing. Rowling's style is colloquial, whereas Tolkien's is not.
