Who am I?
* Former editor of the Michigan Chess magazine.
* Free lance writer for Chess Life.
* Former computer buster for ICC.

I give simuls and teach chess at schools and colleges. My USCF rating was 2050 back in the early 1970's.

I won the official Senior State Championship for Michigan in 2002 and I just volunteered to teach chess at the local Senior center in Grand Blanc, Michigan for free.

Improve your chess for free
You don't need money to get free chess books (some of them classics). Check out this site:

Get free chess books, some of them classics.
www.chessville.com

I checked the site myself and it's legit. No spyware or virus's, just somebody took the time to reproduce chess books where the copyright had expired.

Now here's the catch (you knew there'd be one, right?). There's a LOT of good old chess books that you can d/l for free. The catch is that if you play above 2000 USCF you might not want to follow some of these older openings because many lines have been refuted. On the other hand, because they are so old, if your opponent is following a new book he might not even find the line; and if he does will he/she understand why it's 'been refuted'?

Good example of why I advise players to not study openings - study the reasons the moves are made in the openings.

Enjoy!

hello all!! my name is Janet. I love deep in the woods of the Green Mountains of Vermont. My
hobbies are Astronomy.History,Exobiology,Mathematics and chess.I am also interested in Music
and art. My favorite artist is C,COROT AND my favorite composer is Beethoven. Although i like
Paul Morphy my favorite Chess Master is A,Alekhine. I also like H,N,Pillsbury who's career was
very similar to Mr Morphy's.At a very young age i was fed a steady diet if chess along with Math
and history. For my 9th birthday i got a copy of the 2 great volumes Of ;my best games of
chess' by Alekhine. My father and i would spend many nights going over master games from long
ago. When he was young he used to play at the Marshall chess club where he played skittles
games with many of the old masters. He would have been a master if it paid in those days but he
had to raise a large family. He retained is intellect and vigor to a great age. He died two years
ago.Like him i love chess.I look forward to meeting you all and discussing different
topics....thank you...Janet

I guess im the newest member, Im Yehudit, I come from Ashdod south of Israel. I started playing
chess since young age from my uncle who taught me, and I really liked the idea of the game,
thinking of it just like army vs army. Country vs Country, who will win. I recently started to play
it since 3 years back a lot, I have had a long break from gameknot, 5months+ due to strict
military activity, now i have my own laptop and would be active again

Hi everybody
Hi, My name is Paolo. I'm fifty, got married with two wonderful children. I'm living and working in north Italy. I got some century ago degree in Geologist, some diploma in pipe Organ but life pushed me into information technology. I'm still working in IT, guess for years and years and years before being able to retire...
I love cats (actually, i AM a cat), animals in general, children, teaching, motorcycles, classic music, learn, play pc games and meet new people (not necessarily all these things in this order). I was playing chess till university, then stopped till 2 years ago when i started back together with my son (who plays much better than me).
I'm subscriber here since 2007 and i play on many other sites as well (redhotpawn, chessclan, chesscube, caissa, fics, chesshere, etc).
I recently joined this club and some others because willing to meet new people and improve skills, strategies and tactics.

Best wishes.
Paolo

Hello
In the 1970s I played a bit in USCF tournaments and at my best I was barely a Class B player.
That was a long time ago and now that I'm in my 60s I've discovered that in addition to being
old, my chess certainly is rusty.

I remember studying Morphy's games and being fascinated by his attacks.

Thanks for having me as a member.

Welcome aboard. Not too many of us have studied games. But, we do have some who have, and some others who also know a little of PM's history.

Hello my name is Bob
Thank you for accepting me into your club. I love chess, rated around 1290 and am looking to improve my rating to 1700 some day. Ive studied some of Paul Morphys games and my favorite player is Bobby Fischer.

My OTB rating is 1450 USCF a few years back. I find correspondence chess more challenging than OTB.

I am a co captain for the Cerebral Slayers. I am married happily for 7 years and have two cats.

I am retired so I spend a lot of time at Gameknot. I like to annotate games and post them for analysis by club members so I can learn.

Thanks again and Happy chess, Bob

Hello Everyone
My name is Charles I was on team Alekhine & now team Morphy. I started playing chess at age 10 & followed the games of Bobby Fischer. In the 70's I lived in the Bay Area & played USCF tournaments in Berkeley, my best USCF rating was 2187. I played most of the young up and coming masters & GM of the day, like Walter Browne, Joel Benjamin, Larry Christiansen, James Tarjan. There were 2 brother at almost all the tournaments that beat everyone at blitz but I can't remember their names. I play at the Mechanics Institute in San Francisco & once had a draw with GM Vassily Smyslov. It was a simal in Monterey CA at the Paul Masson Chess Festival.
I got V.V. Smyslov to sign my score sheet & a copy of his book "My best Games of Chess 1935-1957.
I am retired & now live above the Napa Valley in Northern California. I have a good chess book library & hundreds of copies of Chess Life Magazine. I had to stop OTB chess in the late 70's because of work but in the past 10 years or so I have been playing on the internet & happy to be back at the game.
I agree with arrakis08 about openings, I think everyone should study endgames & work back to openings. Don't try to learn a bunch of openings but learn to see patterns & similarities in different opening ideas.

Update to my Hello
I looked through some old issues of Chess Life & found the two brothers that I referenced but could not remember their names, they are Jay & Paul Whitehead. In 1977 Jay played Garry Kasparov to a draw in a 29 move game at Canes sur mer. Jay's current USCF rating is 2461 & has a 2407 FIDE rating. Paul has a FIDE rating of 2350 & USCF of 2385. They were born in 1961 & 1960 respectfully.

chess memories
Hello again, Charles. I can remember playing in the Paul Masson back in '74 (I think). And maybe again in '75. Free wine glasses and free wine, if I remember correctly. The tourney didn't go on for many years after that, but those were the days!

Paul Masson Chess Festival
I know the Paul Masson Chess Festival was held in 1980 at the Saratoga winery & that Dr. Max Euwe & Boris Spassky gave simul there. Henry van Bergen from Glen Ellen, Ca. (just down the road from me) beat GM Spassky in that simul. Henry died January 7 2008 of a heart attack at his home. 1980 could well have been the last year of the festival.

Hello All
Hello Everyone,

Thank You for letting me join this club. I've skirted through some of the threads and many look quite interesting. Looking forward to going through them all.

Im 51, live in Oakland, CA in the western US. I have a son and a daughter who are grown with kids of their own! (can anyone explain where THAT chunk of time went!?)

I played chess in coffee shops as a teenager, then only sporadically after that. Time, finding opponents etc being the issue in not playing for a long time. The Internet of course changed all that. Upon discovering GameKnot I try to maintain at least 40 casual rated games. I especially enjoy the tournaments, ladder and league games as I often find myself playing a wide variety of styles and skill levels.

I had one 'personal life' break there for a few months but see myself playing here at GameKnot for a long time to come. Thanks for the nice welcome Ironbutterfly (great band by the way - my favorite of theirs: Stone Believer), and again Hello to everyone in this club. 'The Pride and Sorrow' has always been my favorite player. Great to see a club set up with his name.

Hello
Michael from the United States. I learned how to play when I was five. Lost interest around ten,
and I'm just starting to get my addiction back. At 17 I still have a lot of time to improve.
