![]() Since our king is still in the middle: A. any attack on the middle potentially attacks our king. B. any attack on the king side potentially attacks our king. C. any attack on the queen side potentially attacks our king. Castling not only puts your king behind a wall of pawns and develops a rook; it also gets the king out of the middle of the board and thereby reduces the number of critical squares which must be defended. This in turn frees up some of your pieces for attack. It's just my opinion, but I always grind my teeth whenever anyone asserts that castling results in a loss of tempo. In my mind it is just the opposite. As far as tempo is concerned, castling is one of the most efficient moves on the board, because it accomplishes several things at the same time. Castling often has offensive, defensive, positional, and tactical advantages all at once. |

![]() I'm looking at something like 32...Qg6 33.Nc1 Rxh6! 34.Bxh6 Qxh6 35.Rxf7 g3? That loses our material advantage, but gets rid of the h-pawn and frees our Queen to be more active as well as giving us a run with our g-pawn. |

![]() But the position is very asymmetrical and and imbalanced. So it presents interesting challenges and opportunities to my mind. It seems a shame to draw the game. I would think someone is going to find a win. Of course antagonistknight (hbird1370) might be the one to find the win I am thinking that 33. . Qg8 puts our queen in a position to move it to e8 for defense, or alternatively to use it to continue to defend our h and g pawns. Leaving the threat of Rxh6 and/or the possibility of Ng6 to attempt to get rid of white's well positioned knight on f4. |

![]() agrees on attempting something then Qg8 offers the least risk per gain. |
