Wowee I was unaware that there is apparently a hugh count of "smallish" star birthing nebulas in the MW.

Orion Nebula
is just one of them. That one is 1500 light years away, or so. That dark area in the Milky Way? It is many vast clouds of interstellar gas and dust obscuring the light of hundreds of billions of stars behind. Many of those sport new star forming regions.
