Team Shamash - Playing White
Thread to post suggestions and discussion on consultation game. Shamash is team leader and Debbie is on board. Club members welcome. We are playing white. Good Luck everyone.

The Way
We have the initiative.

And the way to play the position now is to capitalize on White's development and leverage our advantage -- a positional advantage -- while launching a credible threat. Or multiple threats.

As in war, so in chess: our mission credible, our threat enforceable.

Our initiative.
Yes Shamash, I am in complete agreement with this initiative. It sounds very wise what you are proposing. We do seem to have an edge over our worthy opponents in a positional advantage. I like and echo your idea on launching multiple threats. Let me play this over in my mind a bit and then we can discuss our complex strategy. I have a strong sense we can deploy our soldiers very effectively.

Using our initiative
Consider how hemmed in Black's dark-squared bishop is.

Contrast our bishops, and how they are trained on the Black position like cruise missiles, or like the famous pattern of "Horwitz" attacking bishops, on diagonals side by side.

Consider how our development is alsmost complete, while Black lags behind.
This means time is on our side, and we must use our positional advantage not to defend against a threat that is not there, but to create threats in the service of an attack.
An attack being, as Euwe said, one's initiative combined with a target.

First Move
I've thought deeply over your analysis as to not defending a threat that is not there. The wisdom of this is so simple and true. Our positional advantage is firm and established - we're in no rush. With this in mind I propose pushing the a-pawn. Just a simple non groundbreaking move. Think this over and if you see something better then let's do that. My vote is a5.

About our first move
I think a5 is a good idea Debbie, but I think maybe we should cover our b2 pawn which is under attack by moving it one square ahead, and then we can continue with a5, so I vote for b3

Matter into energy, material into position
Sometimes as in physics we convert matter into energy, material advantage into immediate positional advantage. Look what happened in Japan (both 66 years ago and today) to see how explosive that can be. And how dangerous.

Should White take the our b pawn (which as you point out is under attack, Ardin), that sets off a sequence turning matter into energy, material into positional advtantage.

A sacrifice is an investment in the position or the initiative. The recipe for winning goes: Sow, grow, and mow. a5 is sowing.

A-ha
I understand your point shamash, but what is the continuation if a5 Qxb2, how are we going to grow our positional advantage?
As of now, I can't see how we can manage it.

Hi team shamash
Please forgive this intrusion onto your thread. I just wanted to update you with the latest news from the dark side. We are still struggling to reach a majority verdict on our next move and debates are still continuing on this, but we aim to be ready to play it early next week.

So, please relax and get on with your other games and stuff. Enjoy your weekends and prepare yourselves for our next move.

Their plan of battle
Clearly our opponents are unshakeable in the conviction of their plan.

What is of Consequence
The next move of our opponents -- the move they are debating -- is probably of no consequence. No need to wait.

The position calls for us to attack -- irrespective of their move.

To attack demands initiative, and that we take the initiative.

To strike with initiative, and keep the initiative to sustain our attack in the moves ahead-- we may need all our pieces activated.

Let's think about which piece needs to be activated, and how best to deploy its force.

Keeping our Initiative
Yes I agree Shamash with your directive to coordinate our pieces and fully activate them regardless of the well planned move our opponents will surely come up with. I am spending this weekend reviewing some candidate moves and should be ready to discuss them shortly.

Qb4?
Quite an interesting move by our opponents. A very good move indeed. I propose that we kick the queen away with our dark squared bishop. Is anyone with me on this?

Milking the position
Yes, often (though not always) we do get more from a middlegame position by first increasing the pressure.

How to increase the Pressure
That's a very insightful comment - let me put some more thought into some alternative moves.

I was thinking something like f4, followed by g5.

Next Move...
f4 sounds good, but maybe we should wait on that. I don't know maybe Ra3 is the move for now, laying some claim to the c file (ultimately). We should start coming to a decision soon.

Time to Vote
After careful consideration I still believe Ra3 serves our purpose best. Although sonata has a good point too. I could go either way. Shamash as our team leader will make the wisest of choices I am sure. He has at least two very good moves to consider. Now let's move!

Tough Questions
As in life, so in chess: often it is the questions we ask that define our strength rather than the answers. Long-term questions, not short-term fixes or accommodations.

With its questions, the position now parallels what we face in any good struggle in chess, questions of attack.

Attack, and not threat.

Attack is strategy, threat is tactics. Attack is long-term, threat is move-to-move.

The tough questions about attacking are always these 3:

What to attack?

When to attack?

Where to attack?

What to attack
As we consider our next moveS, let's remember that pieces are not the only targets of attack on the chessboard.

dreams and schemes of Conquest
3 weeks later, so what ideas do we have?

And so we wait...
Shamash is right again, I dare say. We must never stop dreaming and towards that end never stop scheming for the game hinges on their move 30. Will they take the pawn and if not...
While we wait let us ready ourselves for the troops are at our border but it will boil down to one thing "attack -what, when and where". Needless to say we are prepared for battle.

And so we wait...

Move 30 - Done
Our opponents have come up with a very formidable move, indeed - Qd6. I feared that was what they might do. Now, we must face the consequences of this well thought out move. I'm not prepared to comment yet but I'm considering my candidate moves. I thought they'd take the pawn...I think we're still in a good position though. This next move will be make or break!

The Royal Hunt
Peter Shaffer called this stage "The Royal Hunt of the Sun".

When the Conquistadors armed themselves and hunted down the Incan King.

I call upon my teammates to join me on this stage in our game, The Royal Hunt of the Black King.

This next move is not only the beginning of the endgame, it is the beginning of the end for Black.

I'm in Shamash!
Yes Shamash is right again! Now is the time for us to keep a cool head and rally behind our team leader who seems to show no fear in the face of this precarious situation. Hunting down the black king is what we must do. But how? There are so many things we can do and yet so many things we should not do. It reminds me of the classic poem by Robert Frost - "The Road Not Taken" where he states "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both..." But we can not travel "both" so with that in mind I say we CHECK the black king with our queen.
