...Nxd5
agreed. Any move by the knight off of c6 (...Na5, ...Nb4) could be responded to with 8.Qa4+,
and White wins the knight.

two options here

e6 to defend the N on d5. if then Nxd5 exd5 we have stopped their semi passed pawn.

Nxc3. white is building a strong attack on the Q-side with Q N and the threat of Bb5. Nxc3 would break this up.

both moves have equal merit

I fully concur with bigpeta & vote for 8.....Nxc3

I'm not voting for a move yet... just throwing some ideas into the hat
e6 looks like it weakens our position far too much. However, I had my reservations about 8...
Nxc3. I feel White has enough time to play 8... Nxc3 9. Bc4. This can give White a very strong
attack on f7 and I don't think it is anything to be sniffed at.

I'm just throwing it into the hat for people to look at - it'll give you all the chance to check it is
safe.

I think it is more a matter of taste whether black chooses 8....e6 or 8.....Nxc3. If 8.... Nxc3 and 9. Bc4, then return of the knight (9.... Nd5) should keep the game at par. White would have to take the knight (10. Bxd5), but advance of the king's pawn at this point (10....e6) nullifies the threat.

why does e6 weaken our position?
it supports the centre, opens lines for Q & B. The only downside i see is that after Bg5 Be7 we cannot complete the fianchetto that was started with g6.

on Bc4 after Nxc3 i think stalhandske has the correct analysis
gcah2006

e6 provides us with a big dark-square weakness. As you have said, Bg5-Be7 makes the g6 move
look bad and White can attack that stronghold (after O-O) quickly with h4. Black cannot
realistically castle long and that is then a threat to the king.

Stalhandske's analysis does look correct and at least we play e6 with some tempo this time, and
reduce the attacking power of White.

It is probably worth me saying that... I am just throwing some discussion around. I feel that we
will better challenge the masters if we discuss and work together, rather than individually voting
on what we consider the best move.

:) gcah
has a good point.

And if you apply the basics of chess on this game ( specially in this early stage )
then there is only one logical move.

keep on discussing.

gcah
if you dont like e6 or Nxc3 do you have any other suggestions. In all honesty i only see the 2 candidate moves already discussed.

I just said I had my reservations.

After 8... Nxc3 9. Bc4 Nd5 10. e6... we are going to have to play e6 anyway.

So I guess whether we play 8. Nxc3 or 8. e6 depends on which of those positions we would
prefer to be in?

I personally vote Nxc3.
stalhandske
28-Aug-11, 23:08

consensus?
I think it is clear from our discussion that we have only two realistic options, 8....e6 or 8......Nxc3

I really think they are of about equal strength. 8.....e6 may be thought of as more daring for the reasons given by gcah, but 9. Bg5 need not be followed by 9....Be7; 9....f6 is also possible, but I agree that from black's viewpoint the game becomes difficult (though defendable, I think).

On the other hand, 8....Nxc3 may be more straightforward, but it leads to further exchanges (as discussed already), and looks to me as "a route towards a draw". But playing black against a Master, a draw would be an achievement

At any rate, I maintain my position voting for Nxc3 - so far we seem to have consensus on that move (among three of us)
bigpeta

i vote Nxc3
i am coming to agree on Nxc3 as the best of two dubious choices.
we end up playing e6 whichever route we take and bearing in mind gcah's note on our weakness on the K-side, then i think we should go down the exchange route and draw the teeth of any attack.
one other point for consideration - if we are to end up with our K trapped in the centre then we do need to exchange Qs.

We can not sustain a strong point for the N on d5. Even if ....e6, after White plays Bc4 forcing ...Nxc3 and after ...e6 and ...Bg7 needed to castle we would face the same issues. This is essentially a kind of Gruenfeld position, the exchange followed by play against the white pawn pair is necessary. Thus ...Nxc3 seems the best
stalhandske
29-Aug-11, 22:10

@dmaestro
I'd like to slightly differ from this even though I am also for 8....Nxc3. I disagree that 9. Bc4 after 8....e6 would force 9.....Nxc3. 9.....Na5 is in my opinion a better (and quite playable) alternative
