Checkmated after only 22 moves by brigadecommander! Guess walking is a lot harder than talking   Hope to post an annotation soon.

Thank you damalfi for adding comments to the annotation of the above game. I didn't provide
easy19 with a very interesting game. But I still look forward to hearing what others in the
group have to say.

Annotation forecoming
I owe an annotation in a game with easy19, where he luckily escaped with a win. I don't know
how because he was battering me all game.

It is on its way and I'll post here when done.

Gavin & Freddy's Philidor
Gavin, am curious about your thoughts in making your 22nd move as White. ( game )
gcah2006
24-Sep-11, 16:58

Yes... it is an embarrassingly bad move to make. I'd like to blame the pressure of playing a
master, which is why I didn't play 16. a3, but this move was just bad. Really bad. I have no idea
what else to say about it.

pieces as assets to be deployed for offense or active defense
So, Gavin, it sounds like for some time you were viewing your Queen's Bishop as a defensive piece.
And when you moved 7 Qe2, I suppose that is what ruled out 4 moves later, an 11 Bxd3 use of that bishop, which would have positioned it for the offense.
By move 13, Black made no secret of his Queenside pawn storm.
A couple of moves later, White castles queenside.
Was your 7 Qe2 part of your plan to castle queenside?

Right, I'm playing in a tournament this weekend... my first since I was about 7. Five games at
four hours each, so I'm going to be busy preparing, playing and resting this weekend. I will do the
annotation on Monday.

And I replied to shamash in private messages and I'll add my comments there to the annotation,
so do not fret!

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Easy19 ended up besting me; hopefully I learned a few

Poor opening by hogfysshe. Some action and danger for both sides in the middlegame.
ionadowman's very strong bishop pair and queen paralyze white and close things out.

Please feel free to add comments to the annotation.

Thank You Ion for the game.

Not that poor an opening in my view. Placing a N in front of the c-pawn in QP openings isn't easy to play, but it isn't bad, exactly. You just get a different sort of game from the Queen's Gambit type structures.

The move that led to an early Black advantage was, as hogfysshe correctly identified later, his 7th: b3, which weakened the long diagonal and hence his central dark squares. White seemed to be having fun in the ensuing tactical mellay, but it led to an ending in which Black's small material edge was enhanced by the activity of his pieces: the bishop pair backed by the Queen.

Quite a nice game from my point of view. Thanks, hogfysshe!

I enjoyed it as well. Comments on the annotation have me looking at a number of areas to
work on. For example, the discussion of move 12 brings up the importance of considering more
extended exchange scenarios. Thanks all for the comments.

Have a game lined up with stalhandske. Hopefully will be able to give him a good game.

The worst of my three club games so far. Careless mistakes early did me in. Apologies to
stalhandske (and viewers) that the game was not more interesting. A few lessons learned,
and it was enjoyable watching black constrict the life out of white's increasingly cramped
position.

Thank you to stalhandske for the game.
