Some history:
While the Queen's Gambit Accepted was mentioned in the literature as long ago as the fifteenth century, it was the World Chess Championship 1886 between Wilhelm Steinitz and Johannes Zukertort which introduced the first modern ideas in this opening. Black's play had, until then, centered on holding on to the c4-pawn. Steinitz's plan was to return the pawn, but inflict White with an isolated pawn on d4, then play to exploit the weakness.

Even with the modern treatment, the opening suffered from a slightly dubious reputation in the early twentieth century, even as Alexander Alekhine introduced further ideas for Black and it was played at the highest levels, beginning in the 1930s, though becoming less popular after World War II, as the Indian Defenses were heavily played. At the end of the 1990s, a number of players among the world elite included the Queen's Gambit Accepted in their repertoires, and the line is currently considered sound.

Challenge the centre...
... with 3...e5.

...
Exactly my thoughts, e5 is the most agressive response here, so let's play that

now I see...
...why I always decline. Ugh! that looks terrible.

No objection to 3. ...e5. One alternate to consider is 3. ...Nc6. But I can't really get to where I
like it better than 3. ...e5.

I always play 1. Nf6 to completely avoid the Queen's Gambit, so I am at a loss in this position.

However, 3... e5 was the first move I would have looked to go with.

Take it!
4...exd4, making the knight move twice

4...exd4
I agree with sonata on 4...exd4, but the knight doesn't have to move twice as 5.Bxc4 is also possible.

4...Nf6
To be sure, ...exd4 is a good move, but I think ...Nf6 has some nice possibilities, and 5.d5 we
can respond to with 5....c6. Anyway, I wanted to be different.

4. ...Nf6
may keep things unsettled for a bit, but will hopefully lead to a decent position for black.

the votes are a tie so i need one more to make it decisive

Tiebreaker...
I like Nf6.

It's less common in the databases, but I don't see that it can be bad. It's developing a piece and putting pressure on the centre. After 4...dxe4, 5 Bxc4 Black has no development aside from a lonely pawn and White has 2 pieces out and is already getting a look towards f7.

Maybe this is why I'm not a master yet - like I said, the databases don't show it as being very popular

I would suggest 6. ... Bxd2+ and after white plays 7. Nbxd2 we reply with 7. ... exd4. We will then have a pawn advantage against white's lead in development, so we will have a more long term advantage if we can hold our ground.
hogfysshe

6. ...Bxd2+
agree with mchess8484.
ramblinwreck
20-Aug-11, 16:02

6...Bxd2+
I agree. If Janet chooses to take our central pawn with her queen instead (8. Qxd4), we can
initiate a queen exchange; after she retakes we will be able to develop the queen's knight or
bishop and catch up in development.
ramblinwreck
20-Aug-11, 16:04

a follow up to the last post - I was discussing if she also decided to finish the bishop exchange
by retaking with her queen rather than her queen's knight (7.Qxd2 exd4 8.Qxd4)
hogfysshe
20-Aug-11, 16:50

well...
the knight, in addition to being off the back rank, would protect her e-pawn (and the possible
trade off of pawns that could follow looks to end in white being better off). if 7.Qxd2 another
option would be 7. ...Nxe4.

6...Bxd2+
I agree. Not much to say, retreatinhg would just mean losing a tempo.
