![]() Stephen aka battlefleet will play against the club and the club will discuss and vote for there best move to make. Freddy aka easy19 will make the moves for the club. ( all the Masters/mods are excluded from participating ) There will be a live Annotation of every move, and i expected lots of comments from the club players on each move. ( The Master/mods will be 3 moves behind with annotation comments ) The English opening is classified A10-A39 And starts with the following move 1.c4 and wen 1...c5 is played you get the symmetrical variation. some History and Intel: White begins the fight for the centre by staking a claim to the d5 square from the wing, in hyper modern style. Although many lines of the English have a distinct character, the opening is often used as a trans positional device in much the same way as 1.Nf3 - to avoid such highly-regarded responses to 1.d4 as the Nimzo-Indian and Grünfeld defences, and is considered reliable and flexible. The English derives its name from the English (unofficial) world champion, Howard Staunton, who played it during his 1843 match with Saint-Amant and London 1851, the first international tournament. It did not inspire Staunton's contemporaries, and only caught on in the twentieth century. It is now recognised as a solid opening that may be used to reach both classical and hyper modern positions. Mikhail Botvinnik, Tigran Petrosian, Anatoly Karpov, and Garry Kasparov all employed it during their world championship matches. Bobby Fischer created a stir when he switched to it from his hitherto almost universal 1.e4 late in his career, employing it against Lev Polugaevsky and Oscar Panno at the Palma de Mallorca Interzonal in 1970 and in his 1972 world championship match against Boris Spassky. |

![]() but I am interested in exploring the black d-pawn going to d5 early. Have seen this played to good effect but have not experimented with it myself. 2. ...Nf6 may be best in support of that plan. So, 2. ...Nc6 for now, but I'd readily switch to 2. ...Nf6 (...or even 2. ...e6 which I have played a few times), if there is enough interest. ...not that we would have to continue with the d5 idea. |

![]() Originally, I thought e6... and it looks strong (and a more preferable Black move, I imagine) but I'd prefer to get straight into the centre with d5. |

![]() will go with whichever of these two has the most votes. would usually play g6 but wouldn't mind seeing where things go from d5. |
