Planning for the endgame
You cannot just wander into the endgame hoping all will be ok, it must be planned for.
This means deciding what type of endgame you want:- ie which pieces will remain on the board. This also requires that you are familiar with the standard endings, eg K & Q vs K or K & p vs K.
The major piece endings are fairly straightforward so the ones requiring most thought are those involving K & pawn(s).
It is fairly easy to plan trade offs to leave say K & R vs K but pawns require a little more forethought.

Points to consider with pawns are:-
weakness - doubled or isolated pawns.
strengths - passed or over protected pawns. (you have more defenders than opponent has attackers.)
Also to win a K & p ending you need your K in front of the pawns.
One final point is that if you have a single pawn then if it is on the edge of the board your opponent can draw with correct play.

So when planning trade offs to reach the ending you have to take into consideration any resulting pawn structure.
special points are:-
A Q or R getting behind your pawns can reek absolute havoc.
against a lone B you can 'hide' your pawns on its opposite colour.
Deciding when to bring the K out in front can take some care. (I usually think it fairly safe to do so when the Qs are off the board)

At the same time you must identify your opponents strengths or weaknesses and play to eliminate or attack them.

To see a real example look at my earlier post 'anatomy of an endgame'.

Finally plans need not be too tightly defined but you should have at least a general idea of where you would like to go.

endgame
My present game with bigpeta is a good example of not allowing a major piece to get behind your pawn structure, Pete is about to move a rook behind my pawn line, at which point I will be domed.
