Nice!

I had just given a lesson on Anastasia's mate and so went looking for that. I almost missed the clever idea behind this one. This should trip up a few people both on the first and second moves.

At first glance I thought it would be a smothered mate which I had to stop and think about.

After stumbling more or less by accident on the correct first move though, I think it's pretty straightforward; the pinned Pawn is always a nice element to keep in mind.

two solutions for second move

two solutions in main line 1.Ng6+ hxg6 : 2.Qh5+ gxh5 3.Rxe8# and 2.Rxe8+ Kh7 3.Qh5#.

1.Nxf7+ isn't mate in three only because of 1...Qxf7! 2.Qxf7 Rxe1+ 3.Rxe1. (not good for the puzzle but of course sufficient for a game).

The second solution could be eliminated by starting with the White queen on e2 instead of d5. But that would take away the smothered mate illusion, and the false trails are part of the puzzle's attraction.
