Did You know 'Mate' is 'Matti' in Finnish?
Lovely Plachutta type key with two strong mate threats. The thematic heart of the problem is revealed in the variations where the key-piece is captured.

A very fine Puzzle.
I was unable to solve it. Tried both 1.Rxb8, and 1.Bf6 which can be met by 1. -Nc8 and 1.- Qxd4 respectively. Also 1. Nh8 or 1. Nh6 are one move too slow. Only the key-move gives "matti" in two moves.

Night move
After a long thought I figured out it had to be a night move. But which one? I tried a wrong one first. Difficult puzzle (3+ stars) with a higher solve rate than I expected.

Another way to checkmate as well
There is another checkmate using the horse twice instead of once. First you move the knight to d6 then black moves his/her queen to a4 then white check mates by moving the same knight again from d6 to f5. Thats checkmate. look at it the king is in check with white queen when the white knight moves to f5.

@mostrict
1. Why would Black play Qa4 on his first move?
2. Wat about (for instance) 2. Nf5 Qxa3.? No checkmate.

I had a big blind spot with this one.I forgot the Queen was pinned after Qxe6,so wasted an hour of my life looking for another key move.....was I only one to do that??

First I overlooked that too: that's why I started with a wrong knight move.

I always find the trick to this kind of puzzle is to make the right moves.

@ragnar
That same trick can be used to win games.

Excellent Puzzle
That presented so many possibilities without being frustrating, including the Q sac (Qxa7) that, pleasingly, doesn't work. Well done Matti Myllyniemi!
