My 1st try 1.Rc4 (threatening Re4#) failed to 1...Rhe2 2.Rf4 Re2 ! and there is no mate.

1. Rc4... Rhe2, 2. Rg4 (not Rf4) and threatening checkmate on Rg8. If black moves the rook from Re2 to Rg2 then mate is inevitable with 3. Re4#

Rc4 does not work. It's not too hard to see that it's a rook move but the beauty of the problem is in spotting black's defensive resources and thus landing on the correct key. A good problem.

It was fairly easy to see that the solution was going to involve the white rook retreating along the c file threatening mate on the e file and forcing one of the black rooks to go to e2 and obstruct the other one. The hard part was seeing that c5 was the correct square, counter-intuitive because it obstructs the white bishop and allows another variation.
