Outstanding Teaching Example! 😃I kept thinking I had to get him into the corner by the Kt (a1), but that proved virtually impossible. When I found taking the two Pawns (e4, g4) is just as easy as taking the one on b4 (using discovered check), it led me to look for a way of taking the Bishop (using discovered check, of course!). That's how I found something even better: capturing the Bishop when the WK is on f1! 1. Qd3+...Ke1 (forced), 2. Bd2+...Kd1 (forced, he's in a *confined* condition), 3. Be3+ (disc.)...Ke1 (forced), 4. Qd2! (this is the move I had not thought of previously)...Kf1 (forced), 5. Q×f2#. This *confined* condition is one which, if it occurs when no other Black pieces on the board can move, AND it's Black's turn to move, it is Stalemate. BK is confined. Q & B of the same color can do this but Q&N cannot. Here, if it were Black's move, he'd have to move another piece, but we're keeping BK in check every move so as to prevent d8=Q. |
