Nice Puzzle
I had to reverse engineer this to work out the "magic move".

If black had to move there would be only 4 moves/combinations to work through ... enjoy (I did)

The thing that I don't like about this puzzle (and most of the hard daily puzzles) is how do you even get a game to end up looking like this? Black should have resigned ages ago. Black managed to take 1 knight, and 1 rook and 5 pawns and black's king is out in front of his two remaining pawns. Why does it even matter if I can checkmate black in 2 moves, I have enough pieces to crush him any way I see fit. Sorry for the rant, the hard puzzles always just irrationally irritate me.

Chess puzzles
Hi, spulse4,
There are several types of puzzles. We have an important difference here, the puzzles you refer to fall into the category of composed problems or chess compositions. They have their own rules, it's a world apart. Have a read here www.wikiwand.com if you are interested.
The others, derived from practice, called combinations, you can see definitions in these links: www.wikiwand.com) and www.chesshistory.com.

@spulse4
It looks to me as if this part of the site is not for you. Personally I get a lot of enjoyment from the challenge of solving these and looking at all the variations. Let those of us who enjoy them continue to do so.

To your question "Why does it even matter if I can checkmate black in 2 moves" I would respond why does it even matter whether you can checkmate black at all? Chess is just a game, after all.

I did not realise that, but still my reply was worth posting, because we seem to get a lot of comments like that in this puzzles section, and I find it a bit irritating. I don't barge onto the field in the middle of a cricket match or a football game to tell the players how pointless their endeavour is. If people enjoy taking part in something, that should be its own justification.

Memorable Set of Posts!
Even if one doesn't find this puzzle fun, one might learn something from these Comments here.

There are an awful lot of people who do a whole lot of talking, but they don't have any brains! But one thing they don't have, is a diploma. (Purloined from Ray Bolger's Experience, not to be confused with Joe Rogan's), therefore, I'd like to present to you this, your diploma:

1. Qh1... Kf5
2. Nf2#... (Other branches exist)

Like 1... d6, 2. Nc5#
Or, 1... d5, 2. Qh3#
Or, 1... Kd5, 2. Bb3#
