Probably a more interesting puzzle (though not in the GameKnot format) is to go back a half-move:



And find Black's only move that wins, or for that matter survives.

Interestingly, putting that into my version of Fritz makes its analysis figures go higher than I've ever seen - Fritz scores it -45.88! Usually once it gets to 40, the next step is mate in x.

Black can survive???
Phonybenoni, I have pored over your version of this puzzle for quite some time, and I can't find any way for black to escape the double threat from the white's queen and knight. Please tell me how black survives in this game.

Blacks survival (win?)
A pity phonybenoni isn't with us anymore to explain as I think cdeburca with the help of Fritz is right. If Rb8 moves anywhere white plays BxRf8 RxBf8 Qc5 and the double threat of Qxf8 and Nf7 can't be countered.

Having enjoyed the contributions of phonybenoni over the years I thought I'd check out what he suggested to honour his memory. It seems that countisouard is right. Stockfish produced the following mate in 12 for black:
1 ... Ne4
2 Bxf8, Rxf8
3 Nf7+, Rxf7
4 gxf7, Bxf4
5 f8=Q, Kxh7
6 Qe8, c1=Q
7 Qh5+, Bh6
8 Qg6+, Kxg6
9 fxe4, Qxd2
10 exf5+, Nxf5
11 Kb3, Bd1+
12 Ka3, Qxb2#
There are, of course, many possible variations but, if Stockfish is correct, they all lead to mate in 12.
