2. Nd6+ allows Kd7 and the mating threat is gone. For example, 3. Qe8+ Kxd6. This line could
continue with 4. Qxf8+ Kd7 5. Qxf7+ Kc6 6. Qe6+ Qd6 and White is down a piece.

2. Nf6 double check is better since the King can only go to d8, after which White mates.
