What makes this hard nut to crack is three so different variations. Each has different mating pattern and different mating piece.

And ... Ahh, I guessed it. The problem is by Edith Baird...

Edith Baird?
...that crossed my mind as well. I find Mrs. Baird's compositions especially difficult usually but this didn't cause me too much trouble. Very nice composition however & well worth 4 stars.

Good puzzle
Mate in three can get tricky.

Baird must have been a fine player.
It was tricky but good for the mind and soul.

The key to solving this one was noting that in the initial position, if Black had the move, 1...Ke5 is answered by 2. Bg3+ and 3. Qh1#. Any white opening move needs to allow for the possibility of 1...Kxg5, but we also need to keep the queen's ability to mate on the h1-a8 diagonal, though not necessarily on h1. The key move does this, by allowing for 3.Qb7#.
