.. but perhaps it's the quiet nature of that first move that throws people? I toyed with a couple of alternatives, Nd3 which doesn't go anywhere & Qg2 which looks more promising but for the unprotected knight. That suggests that you need to defend the knight & hey-presto!
Really not so difficult & gave 3 stars.

Presumably the first move could also be g6 instead of g5

... No because it's necessary to defend the knight and g6 would leave it hanging after Ke3
