Edit Button
Just a thought - why can't we have an 'edit comment' button which would allow us to edit comments after
posting, just as we can edit our own chess puzzles?

I see Baron added a comment in another thread to 'edit a word' in his previous post. How much simpler
to just hit the Edit button?

I'm sure something most of us have experienced, after carefully reading through the preview of our post, a
glaring mistake or some awkward syntax jumping right at us after we have pushed the 'Post Now!' button.

Then we have choices to make. We can delete the comment (and for ever and a day it shows just that). We
can suffer the embarrassment and leave it as is. We can post a correction below (which still highlights the
lexical faux pas). Or we can just hit the Edit button - I wish.

Believe it or not, it a world of txt msg language, there are still those of us who appreciate well-written
communications.

Personally, I feel the exclamation mark on the 'Post Now!' button is the cause of many mistakes in messages.
It seems to have a magnetic effect on my mouse, and it appears to encourage you to post before you can
possibly change your mind.

Go on! Go on! Hit it! Don't worry about that spilling mistake!!!

Personally I agree with this notion. I know most forums and such have edit buttons so I dont see why this one shouldn't.

I agree that this option would be badly needed. The GK Forum software is overall very simplified, but having an ability to fix spelling errors and typos is just elementary for any message board. Right now, the only thing one can do is to delete their former post, and create a new one.

Ps. One such type just happened to me! The spellchecker can only help you so much.

Sorry, guys, no "edit" button in the forums is by design. Otherwise it can quickly get confusing when someone's post said one thing and then later on was edited to say a completely different thing. And it can easy be abused or employed for general troublemaking. Make a good use of the spellcheck option, don't rush to post your messages too quickly, double-check the preview before final posting, and you'll be fine.

Hmmm
I Have noticed that confusion of change (ala Edit) on another site or two. Sometimes here when posts are deleted long after posting time. Except, when they are My posts deleted later ... for some reason that seems to make the thread ~ Clearer~ ?! Oh well . . .

[ I guess knowing six different ways the name has been spelled, still does not make one Shakspeer. BTW as long as we're name dropping, I Have been to HIS HOUSE. He wasn't in ... but they Did invite me back !   ]

Thx for the reply GameknotDOTcom !

Fair enough GK
I can see your point.

I guess it would be difficult to implement, but what about a button which remains active for 15 mins after posting,
just to fix those glaring mistakes?

thekingni ... dream on, 'too much like Bobby'!

Baron... Yes, I agree. When someone systematically goes through a thread and deletes all their posts it does
interrupt the flow a little.

Thanks for all the replies.

It can get confusing, in theory. But it does work ok in all of the other Forums I've visited, so why not in GK's. Naturally, the Edit feature should only be used to fix grammatical issues and typos, and possibly to add something to one's texts before anyone else posts, never to change any of the existing, established points or completely reverse your arguments. But I think that even the most random Forum users understand this better than expected, and those who don't probably don't care enough to use the feature in the first place.

On the contrary, I would argue that implementing this feature might even make the Forums easier to read, because currently with the message deletion being the only way one is able influence their past posts, we're having threads with several back-to-back messages from the same user, with all but the very last one deleted. This inflates the post count of all threads, and makes the discussion more difficult to follow. If we had the possibility to edit the past posts, the user could just edit the first one, and there would be no need for repeated posting.

That said, I realize that these Forums are not among the core features of GK. Its a correspondence chess website, and if not developing the forum software further means that the team has more time to work on the chess features, then I'm totally fine with that. But considering how active these Forums are, I'd think that many people would appreciate an update for the software that is arguably obsolete.

a short time on button
This is not a big issue but an edit button on for say half an hour would be nice.
