two photographs?
Is there any possibility to allow different photos
as avatar and with the profile page, as it used to be?

Unfortunately, there isn't Stal. I wished I could say otherwise, or even, that I don't know. But, I was wondering the same thing a while back, so before deeper_insight left. He asked, and administration said that it's no longer possible. Now, as good as, my memory is, I forgot the reason why, but I think that it was due to technical issues, which I've seen before.

GameKnot
I know the old story of this. Then we were promised this change in the future. I am asking GameKnot whether it wouldn't be time now to open up the old luxury of allowing two photos?

Yeah, I was only alluding to the old story. I'm also hoping for a new change, as well. I would like to be able to have more then one picture.

Ability to upload more than one image to player's profile was discontinued several years ago due to technical reasons. We considered implementing animated images, videos, with sound, etc., but decided to limit any media files to a player avatar. We are simply not an image/video hosting website, and would rather spend our time and resources working on chess related features instead. You are always welcome to host any number of images (or GIFs, videos, podcasts, etc.) on any external services dedicated to such things, and link to it on your profile page, in the additional info section. Any properly formatted URL will automatically turn into a clickable link.

GameKnot - an appeal
Thanks for the reply. Of course GK is not an image-hosting website, but I think your policy downplays the social aspect of the Club. I know nothing about the technology required, but since the two-picture-policy was possible earlier, for years, I have difficulties understanding why it could not be implemented again relatively easily. GK's chess-related features are superb, but having been member now for 10 years I think I can say with some confidence that the social aspects are just as important. In fact, I have noted that there are several paying members who are very active in GK discussion clubs, but play chess relatively little. Thus, I think GK should consider this feature as an attraction to increase membership. The two-picture feature could be reinstated, valid only for paying members!

I would rather have a two picture option as you guys mention(must have happened before I joined GK) and get rid of other things that are forced on my profile against my wishes, like
a blitz attack score, the equivalent a permanently placed unwanted "tattoo" if I just happen to want to play blitz attack, which I will not play due to my profile being "marked up" against my wishes. That should be allowed by me only by an optional click choice.I don't care if that does not bother anyone else,it bothers me.Just because I try something as an experiment(like a Blitz attack),it should not then have to stand on my profile like a sore thumb.Maybe if it disappeared
in 30 days or so,then ok.

Also, let me add my opinion,as the "first impression"I got when coming to GK regarding this double picture "repeater".That seems to me to be completely redundant.Perhaps two different pictures as stalhandske mentions above or a smaller profile picture and then a different avatar picture, maybe a smaller one.In theory,I would think that having 2 different pictures might even bring in more members looking for something as unique as that.Personalizing ones profile seems to me to be a better business approach to draw in more potential members.

And not to be a pest, but there are others on this GK site that do have 2 different pictures and others cannot have two different pictures. While I understand the reason to be that those who have two pictures simply kept their profile with 2 different pictures prior to the change,is that really "fair"to those who ALSO want 2 different pictures? So,some are allowed to "keep" two different pictures and others are not allowed.Seems unfairly balanced to me.

I didn't want to comment after stal's post, but I have to disagree with his appeal. Although, I understand why stalhandke and others want it. I also feel that it'd be nice to go back to 2 pictures. But, my disagreement is based on GK's post since it's not a necessity by my books. "We are simply not an image/video hosting website, and would rather spend our time and resources working on chess related features instead." To me, that point is more then valid since this is, more or less, where I come from. And, it's based on why people join this site, as well as, how I think. For me, it's not about if you can have more then one picture for fun, but rather, it's about becoming a better chess played. For example, this is the only reason why I'm picky about which clubs I join as I'm not into politics and religion but focus on progress and not just based on ELO rating, either. And, GK's chess related features has helped me to improve, in the long run.

I see your point jkarp. But why not have both?I am sure that GK has been using their resources to improve things for years.I do not really see two different pictures holding up their time and
resources since it was done for years prior anyway. That would seem like small change in the pocket to me for GK and their resources, time, energy and efforts.Just my opinion, right or wrong as a newbie on this site which I know is the best.

and jkarp, you yourself said above...." I would like to be able to have more then one picture."
So you do agree with the idea, not disagree.

In general, yes. But, what I'm also saying is that two pictures isn't the most important thing either. And, it's true that they've been using their resources for years, at least 5. However, the recent improvements happened about a year ago, I believe when they first updated the post game analysis to the new version of Stockfish which is considered the best form of computer analysis. They also did something to make it more social with this new chat feature, I believe it is with some type of notification. So, they still continue to work improve things.

Yes,I agree with you Jkarp.Pictures are certainly not the most important thing on GK but still would be a nice treat to many on this site.I do see that some others still maintain two different pictures.I am glad that those few that still have two different ones were not forced to give
one of them up.

Video Animations
I enjoy having two photos--one the icon folks can identify me by and the other the photo on my profile page showing off other interests. I cannot change either one now--and I would really like to update both of them. I'd hate having them be the same, which is why they cannot be changed.

I agree that animated gifs and video is undesirable. The uploaded images could be limited to 72 dpi images--that is plenty for most devices--fast--and the file sizes need not exceed 200K.

I'm with Stalhandske on this one--two photos doesn't make one an image hosting site. Like Stalhandske I too fail to understand what technical difficulties prevent this, and unlike him I work in IT. I don't do a lot of web hosting or development, but this limitation really does seem kind of bizarre.

I disagree with Stalhandske in one respect--this option wasn't just for paying members originally and I see no reason to create the limitation. If it can't be done I'll just live with my old photos, and hope those aren't someday broken.

There are other features that have been eliminated over time, but there have been improvements too. I'm very happy about the new chess engine. I would like to hear Stalhandske's opinion of it now that he has had opportunity to analyze games with it.

Labyrinthine, I see your blitz attack score has disappeared. I am disappointed about that. Some day I'm going to have to give the blitz attack a shot, and some of the other things, to dress up my rather boring profile page a bit. Sad you were able to white wash that tramp stamp.

Photos
I'd make my icon photo the "Lord Shiva" icon I used to have. That was kind of cool. The photo of me with the leather cowboy hat gives people the impression I'm some sort of hoodlum. I got that hat in Leon, Mexico, and still get a lot of compliments on it.

As for the profile photo, I have built much more awesome looking chess sets since the one depicted. The boards are really beautiful. And I'd like to showcase the work I've done on the telescope mirror, and other things.

And yes, I spend far more time on the discussion boards than I do playing chess. It is really interesting talking to chess players--the game stimulates a type of intellectual development I don't find nearly as common in any other social circle.

Sorry to tell you lord_shiva,but I never played blitz attack ever, not even one time,so you must have me confused with someone else. There never was a "blitz attack score"on my profile ever.

As to two pictures,I am working on a split single photo with two individual pictures. Not sure if I can do it,since I am an amateur, but I am experimenting. That will be my way around just one image.

Blitz Attack
<<I would rather have a two picture option as you guys mention(must have happened before I joined GK) and get rid of other things that are forced on my profile against my wishes, like

Ah, I misread this. I thought you were complaining about a tattoo, but see you are happy not to have gotten one.

A split photo will render your icon indecipherable, but yeah--sort of a workaround.

BC posts awesome photos of planets and deep sky objects she takes. Then her icon becomes some black box until she changes it again. I cannot think of anyone who likes being stuck with the way it is now, but I guess it discourages a lot of uploading.

My guess is that GK has implemented some image processing software to weed out highly objectionable content but for some quixotic reason they can't make it work on more than a single file set. Maybe there is a prohibitive licensing fee. Or it could be something else.

Right now,I am posting about a Pop star that few know about anymore in the USA.
But even with Sandra, she has several photos that are two and even 4 photos in one.I already posted one to look at it and it was still big, fine and very clear and I did not see any "icon"disappear. But I have other ideas in mind. Not really a big deal to me,but I have the time being retired.By the way,I am terrible at blitz and probably will never play it here.

Best,
Lucas
