Gameknot rating vs official ELO rating |
||

People over there say that chess.com rating is usually 200 points higher than FIDE rating, so judging by that my FIDE strength would be roughly 800 elo, which Im not even sure exists (don't they start at 1000?). I would normally deduct 600/700 points from GK's rating when thinking about somebody's OTB rating. But then again time controls are very different so some would say you can't compare. |

I think...OTB you don't have access to opening database, can't consult books, can't use the Analyze the board future, have much more psychological pressure. So, GK rating is pretty inflated... |

2200 and it took years to reach that level for me.On GK,I consult opening books,look at things like MCO book chapters,take much more time to move,have players quit or time-out more on GK than OTB and have reached a 2400+ level.In reality,my OTB and Corresp rating are about 200 points in difference.I think that is about on par with most I have chatted to over the years. Now blitz ratings can fluctuate even more than regular OTB vs Corresp ratings,due to many factors like the psy. pressure and more.It is not unheard of to be,for example,2200 rated in GK corresp or other chess site corresp and then be only 1800 rated in BLITZ corresp or 1700 rated in OTB blitz...a difference of 400-500 rating points.Many players on GK have never even played OTB,just corresp.I know of many who never even lifted up a chess piece with their fingers. |

I mean, let's make a comparison of playing strength, shall we? This is a random game from a 1000 elo player vs a 1200 elo player taken from GK. Not writing down any names because this is not meant to shame anyone... 1. c3 d5 2. d3 e5 3. h3 h6 4. f3 Nf6 5. Be3 d4 6. cxd4 exd4 7. Bf4 Bc5 8. Qc2 Qe7 9. a3 g5 10. Bg3 Nh5 11. Nd2 Nxg3 12. Rh2 Nxe2 13. Nxe2 Bd7 14. Nc4 b6 15. g3 Nc6 16. g4 b5 17. Nd2 Qe5 18. Rf2 Bd6 19. Ne4 f5 20. gxf5 Ne7 21. b4 Nxf5 22. Qd2 Ng3 23. N4xg3 Qe3 24. Ra2 Qxd2+ 25. Kxd2 Be5 26. Ne4 Bf4+ 27. Nxf4 gxf4 28. Rc2 Rc8 29. Nf6+ Kd8 30. h4 Be6 31. Rc6 Bd7 32. Nxd7 Kxd7 33. Ra6 Ra8 34. Rg2 Rh7 35. Rg4 h5 36. Rxf4 Kc8 37. Rxd4 Rd7 38. Rxd7 Kxd7 39. Bg2 c6 40. f4 Ke7 41. Rxc6 Rd8 42. Rc7+ Kf8 43. Rxa7 Re8 44. Ra5 1-0 Now, this is a 10 min rapid game I lost at chess.com against a 1000-1100 player, who happens to be 800 elo at blitz too. I just resigned early after I dropped the pawn because I knew I was already losing 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. c3 b5 6. Bc2 Be7 7. d3 O-O 8. O-O d6 9. Re1 Re8 10. h3 Bf8 11. Nbd2 g6 12. Nf1 Bg7 13. Ng3 d5 14. exd5 Nxd5 15. Bg5 Qd6 16. Qd2 Nf6 17. Bh6 Qf8 18. Bxg7 Qxg7 19. Ng5 Bb7 20. N3e4 Rad8 21. Nc5 Ba8 22. Nxa6 1-0 Now, I know Im not a good player overall and even worse than that at rapid, but surely you can see the difference in knowledge and intent between my opponent who's 1100 elo at the other site, and the random players from GK who are at around the same rating. It's not even close. What's more, it took my opponent just 1m 30s to play like this - 1 minute if you will, since he took 30 seconds for 1 move. I've played people over there who have had .20 centipawn loss on average in 25 move games and who happen to be rated at 1000 elo. On here, sometimes you dont get such performance even in the 1600 bracket (and I do know, because, while I don't study chess at all, I enjoy postmortem analysis with Stockfish). So yeah, GK rating is way way inflated, and I would say by more than 500 points. So anyone who'd like to draw a comparison between their GK rating and their hypothetical OTB strength is in for a very hard ride, lol. |

Mine is certainly NOT 400-500 different.I know this because my official USCF OTB rating was 2200 and my GK rating is 2400+.Thats only 200 points,not 400-500 difference.Perhaps when master levels are reached compared to 1793 ratings,there might be a vast difference,but that is certainly not everyone.So "inflation"is a relative term and in the chess piece of the beholder. |
