Life membership again....maybe?
About every 5 years,as in the past,I can remember GK offering a life membership for those who want or can afford it.I am a life member now, actually more than once since 2005 when I first joined GK.I had closed my past life member accounts for various reasons then got another one later in the years. If I remember correctly,I paid about $181.00 US for my first life membership.I forget what I paid again later. It probably was not much more.In a way,its worth it.For example, for a Gold...its about $40.00 a year that never ends.So $181.00 divided by 40 is only 4.5 years and then you paid off the 181.00 and have your lifetime to play for free after that.Higher than gold membership life options like Platinum or Titanium are more,of course.
I was offered that as an upgrade, but I have no need or desire to play more games at one time.
I usually play no more than 3 or 4 games at a time anyway...the smarter way to go.I suppose I personally did not save $$ after dissolving my past life membership by doing the math, but if I live another 20 years and do not leave GK again,it is still worth it.I suppose, for me,unlike others,I tend to go away from GK for months at a time, whether it be on a world travel and other things and will probably forget to renew any membership I have if it comes up.So,a lifetime membership does insure continued service without the need to be "around".

Since I rejoined GK again in 2018,if you add 5 years to that,it would be 2023 for the next life membership...in theory. But of course,it is now 2024.Just wondering if sometime this year,in 2024 GK will offer it again?I get many PM's asking me things like this. But I do not know all the answers!

Of course,as GK has always mentioned...nothing is set in stone for a life membership to come about, but GK had been fairly steadfast in handing them out about every 5 years or so from the past. But now,GK is under different management,so...who knows?I guess that I better keep my life membership this time, just in case its not offered again

Hopefully current management sees and responds asap.

I agree with neverherebefore.
However,do not hold your breath. Not that it will happen to GK,but I have seen plenty of chess sites close over the decades,I lost count. Its an interesting pattern online as well as in real life business...especially with takeovers.Ever notice many times with business's from stores to gyms, when someone takes over that in 1 to 3 years that business goes out of business or bankrupt?Perhaps someone or a group of CEO's tried to make something work better and more profitable but failed?

Again,I do not reflect this thought with GK,but it does raise a red flag of concern.Sometimes,a business can yield profit...but "not enough"profit to build the business better and that business stagnates because improvements may zero-out profits. But that is life in the business world.Improvements and add ons are more than flipping a few switches. It may involve hiring an additional research crew, updated computer systems and more which is expensive. So,additional life memberships may indeed,be on the "backburner",but time will tell.

Now,I am already a life member,so my thoughts were for others, not me.
People ask me all the time about chess things going on with GK,but I am just as in the dark
as others. But my experience with over 10 chess sites and in business myself, has some parallel
and intersecting thoughts about the reality of some issues that pop up later in the years,
whether it be about chess sites, gyms or in the music industry like I was in a prior life.
I call it "reoccurring patterns"of emergence.And with todays economy,that can a will
put a "monkey wrench"into many online and offline business's.Hold on tight.

I am beginning to doubt it....
Based upon prior knowledge of that "5 year stat"when life memberships are supposed to surface again as they have in the past,my calculations say that no later than 2023,an option for a life membership was "supposed"to have occurred.Never in writing,of course, but the past did show a "reoccurring pattern"of a Life option showing up.Perhaps, that was more Mikes idea and not the new management? But this is now well into 2024.I forget, but I think I paid around $187.00... 6 years ago for a life membership. If nothing occurs in 2024 as an option, then it is conceivable that the life option has disintegrated. If GK goes south, its a moot point anyway. But that is an unknown yet.For those who plan to stay on GK for years,it is indeed, well worth a life membership because it will pay itself off in a few short years and after that,GK is free and as a premium member, not a free member with ad banners, ect, ect. It all depends upon how one looks at it.

I bought a lifetime platinum membership back in 2006 when I created my team the International Chess DOGs. This membership has been a very good choice for me. A lot has changed at GK since then. Most recently new GK ownership. I do hope GK offers a lifetime membership again for GK members who do not have a lifetime membership. It is a good deal.

I beat the GK record for life memberships.
I have had 3 gold life memberships since they first came out.How?Well....
The reason for that is because I closed my account 3 times since 2005 when I first joined GK,then came back to GK again. So,the life membership has been offered 3 times since 2006 and I took it again, then again for a 3rd time being around 2018,if I remember correctly.

So,I spent much more $$ than anyone on GK,coming and going and a few times not wanting to be on GK(for a few reasons I will not discuss),world travels, leaving the chess scene and more.Other reasons were my involvements with the USCF,ICC and more,so GK took a back seat. And I am not on any teams or plan to be on a team.Of course, with the $$ I spent 3 times,it will never pay itself off at my age, unless I live to age 95 or so.But no matter,it is well worth it.Just do not do like I had done.Keep the life and never close your account, for then you lose it.I like the life because to me it is a..."set it and forget it"and no need to be around to renew it.That allows me total freedom to not even check back with GK,even if it is years knowing my account is still active.I only closed my account a few times because at the time,I did not think that I was going to come back to GK.Although,GK once told me that I must at least "check in" or log in once a year to keep my account active. Not sure that is the case anymore, but better safe than sorry.

Thanks neverherebefore
Except for one thing...I am a guy,not a gal.My profile states male, not female! And my post above says...Joe. Many know me on GK for years.

I am only highlighting a famous female Pop music star from Europe in my profile and someone I met recently in 2022.
80's music is my specialty.I am honoring Sandra as a huge fan of hers. So,not to get off subject, but I thought I would tell you for future reference. But its the thought that counts!Plus...if "I"was a Pop Queen,I do not think that I would be on GK playing chess!

Best,
Joe
