I asked him what advice he could give me, my rating was around 1740 over the board and it either goes up 10 points or down 20 odd?! He said to me so many players think of either winning by out playing there opponents in the opening or launching a speculative quick attack against an opponents king? And when it doesn't work tgey tend to have no plan B He said as black I either play Caro Kann v 1.e4 sometime a French!? And 1.d4 as white , he said I don't really study openings, very little instead I play for (PAWN STRUCTURES) These are tge sole of chess and dictate whether a game will be eventually won or lost. He recently sent me by request a copy of his book "Arkell's Odyessy's" and I would recommend grabbing a copy you snd will improve your game for sure!
