Getting disconnected in blitz games
I've noticed an interesting pattern that happens sometimes when I play blitz games and get disconnected. The other player seems to be taking a long time, and as soon as I click on the "Send" button to send a message to the other player, I get a notice that *I* was disconnected. It often seems to happen within a second after I click on "Send". Perhaps I was disconnected a while back and never knew it until I clicked on "Send", and all that time, I thought the other player was just taking a while on making a move. So now to find out if I'm really disconnected and not just waiting for the other player, I type in short message and click on "Send". I hope this clue helps Gameknot track down the bug that disconnects people from blitz games.

There is no "disconnect bug". The Blitz Chess app never disconnects you from the server, unless you close the window. When you get disconnected, it's just that -- the app loses connection to the server. Most often it's because of a flaky Internet connection, sometimes it can be caused by the operating system, or other programs running on your computer. It's nothing that we can do about or have control over, other than to inform you that you've been disconnected. Yes, because of the way the Internet works (TCP/IP protocol, to be more specific), often you won't not actually know that you've been disconnected until you try to send something to the server and you can't. Which is why you often get disconnected shortly after sending a message, or making your next move. We can of course try to send a request to the server every second asking "can you hear me now?", but it will quickly overwhelm the server if there are a lot of players connected. We do have plans to hide the disconnect event completely from the user and re-establish the connection seamlessly behind the scenes if we can, but it's not as trivial as it might seem. I've just checked the internal stats, and at this moment there is a player who has been connected to the Blitz server for the past 3.7 days and played 57 games during the current session. Another player connected for 3.1 days and played 14 games, and another connected for 1.6 days and finished 21 games. Of course they haven't been playing all this time continuously, instead they probably simply left the Blitz Chess window open between playing games. But if there was any sort of "disconnect bug", it probably wouldn't be possible to stay connected for this long. Our own testing of course didn't find any issues either.

Of course there will be disconnects simply based on your home internet connection. What's GK going to do about that?

I agree for the most part...
with the GK staff.I do believe it is usually the internet server,or even moreso, usually the computer you are using and possibly other hidden programs that may be running at the same time that you happen to be on the GK blitz window. Some higher end computers with larger hard drives, memory, speed, constant updating the server and other parts of the computer operating system are constantly necessary or hidden things running must be extinguished before entering a blitz room.By comparison,I use to have an older laptop that I used on several blitz sites. It was always getting disconnected in mid game! So,I bought this new quadcore with all the bells and whistles, auto updates,8GB memory,1 terabyte HD ect,and never again after that had any disconnects!I feel even with other programs running or some other kind of interference, the better computer systems can handle unforeseen and potential disconnect problems. Atleast this is my opinion, right or wrong!

login failed message
I've recently been unable to play "live" chess. Constantly receive "login failed- disconnected from server" message when selecting live chess icon. No problem playing my team games. What to do?

I have not had any "login in" fail issues with blitz but have had an increased level of disconnect issues DURING the blitz game....about 3 of them over the last few weeks. But was always able to quickly "reconnect"with the blitz game by clicking on the reconnect option below the blitz board. Something must be going on,because I never had those issues even one time for years...when I played non rated blitz on GK.And no,its not my internet or my computer or malware or anything else on my side.I have a computer pro always checking out my system and my internet,so I know its NOT on my side....but perhaps my opponents side?Who knows. Just a minor inconvenience to me,but I hate to see others have issues.

Ahhhhh...update!
I just checked the rated blitz only a few seconds ago.Indeed, there is a "login in fail" and disconnect from server issue,so you are not alone 2dos.And I know its not coming from my side. Must be a GK issue, perhaps after that downtime scenario, things have to be "reset"in the rated blitz area.I have not tried the non rated option, but it will probably be the same.Again,if I am having an issue, then probably everyone else is.But 5 minutes from now, things can change,so we will see.I will check back tomorrow in the rated blitz and see if the "plug"was put back in on GK's computers that use old tesla coils from the Frankenstein movies.🤣
