RIP Fastbernie 1.3.1928-12.9.2011
Sadly Bernard ( Hanison) passed away on 12th September 2011.

I was fortunate to play Bernie many times at Correspondence Chess, long before GK ever existed. He was a fine player and a lovely guy, I know in his later years he had many ailments but never seemed anything less than cheerful. RIP Bernie, I hope you find many chess players up in heaven !

My heart is heavy
Oh no!!!!! My heart is very heavy!

I had the pleasure of getting to know Bernie for several months before he mysteriously disappeared from Gameknot.

We added each other to our "Friends List", but soon he went silent. Every day I have watched the number of days since he has last been online grow...

He was a great player and and a wonderful human being.

I suspected that he might have died, but I was hoping he was just sick.

About 2 months ago I started searching the Internet looking for answers. I never found an obituary or any other clue that might confirm my suspicions so I felt a little better.

What I did discover though was that he had a very full, and amazing life.

I learned that when he was only 30 he owned and was head of a large publishing company that he had built from the ground up. I also found that he was an extremely accomplished Correspondence Chess player that had written hundreds of chess articles. I have read some of them and his insights and analyses are brilliant!

Last, but not least, he has a huge family that was lucky enough to know him and that surrounded and loved him!

Recently, a friend of mine suggested that I stop searching the Internet looking for answers. I couldn't change what I might find.

He explained that ignorance is NEVER bliss, but there is an exception to every rule, and in this case ignorance would keep my hope alive, and there was no harm in having hope.

He was right...

We'll miss you Bernie,

I
had the honor and pleasure to play Bernard Hanison in a couple of games in 2004/05 and we had such a wonderful dialog going thru the games. He was a real character and was very cheerful to exchange words with. The man was married for more than 62 years and had a fantastic family, which he was loving over everything else.
I'm sad to here he is not with us anymore, but I know he had a rich life and I'm sure he is now resting in peace were ever he may be.

With respect and condolences to his family.
