40-day "timeout"
How it is possible, that my percentage of games, that I lost under 16 moves can increase (from 12% to 20%), although my games are all postponed and no game is being finished? Julia

now, my percentage...
... is even 22% and I dont understand, how that happens. it is annoying, when I try to improve my percentage and the percentage does increase itself again, and this WITHOUT my help.

The "past 40 days" is a period of time that moves forward as the time passes. For example, if you finished 5 games normally one week, and another 5 games the next week, and then you had 1 abnormal game, the percentage is 9%, because of 1 abnormal game out of 11. If you do not finish any new games, and let the time pass until the first 5 games fall outside the "past 40 days" time period, your new percentage is 17%, because now you have 1 abnormal game out of only 6 games. The solution is to simply finish more games normally (or wait at least 40 days).

Why should abnormally finished games be recorded against a player who tries to improve how the % against is I understand the frustration My timeouts in overall games is 4.9% I think due to past computer issues when I had poor wifi It is recorded on my home page I try to reduce all the time - it's not a massive problem I just wonder how much my "losses " column Would improve without the ones I've made Neil

myself,...
...I only have to finish some games as fast as possible to be able to take part in the next gameknot tournament and should not give up a game before the 16th move.

It sounds like you are not properly managing your concurrent games. If you have the need to quickly get rid of games on your list to make room for others, then that is a disservice to your opponents in those games.

In fact
What Sasha posted is one of the reasons that I'm super picky and won't play more then 2 games at once. Even at 6 games at once, I had to worry about it and instead of timing out, I was, in the opposite way not managing my games properly. As I was moving way too fast to concentrate, and if we want to be exact here, my fastest average time per move was 18.2 minutes which is blitz speed. That was, when I had 20+ games at once. But, even with 6, I felt rushed with my busy schedule, so I did not take it slow and easy which led to mistakes that ought to not have been made.

I think Joe if he new I'd=cheeky_knight he would never suggest she would ever do an opponent a dis-service , it's not in her nature I've played some great games against her and learnt from all of them

a disservice to my opponents is not my intention at all, I am not simply giving up any games. But as I am suddenly required to reach a certain rate of finished games in a given time, I try to reach the rate a little faster. I nevertheless go on playing my games in a normal way, I dont give up any position, that is not lost. In general I think, that the "40 day timeout" may lead to a delay of lost position, because someone would like to remain under 20% as long as the 40 days are not over. concerning many player, it will for sure lead to a lot of tactical manoeuvring to remain within the permitted percentage.

I looked at some of your past games, Neil, and see 3 or 4 against cheeky_knight. But, I also came across this thread with TA because I've studied and learned a lot from this Senior Master before. gameknot.com

3or 4 Joe it's 17 I think and most of them defeats ! LoL , But I think you missed my point Joe , probably due to my poor diction TA has given me advice in the past and a few player's of a much higher rating privately responded to my request years ago on how to improve , and as you can see I never listened !!! 😉 You have made great strides in your play , your way , and I in mine each to his own I do really read a lot though about old player's in there early play days (p.s I have used a spell checker but still type faster than my brain thinks ! )

Yes, I see what you're saying. When it doesn't fit my style, I don't listen either. The main one of course, was who I mentioned, the master mater. But, there's someonelse who I don't listen to, for the most part, and isn't on GK anymore. The exception to that, however, was cutting down games. I used to not when I had 20-30 before I started working. Then I got a job and realized how little time I had to concentrate. Nowadays, if you count more then a couple it's basically chaos because we're talking about work and chess club. But, there's also the fact that I workout before working, and the fact that after a certain time, I'm not online. Whereas before, I was on late at night which was a terrible decision that could've, indirectly, gotten me into trouble at work. So, when we count all of that I just don't have the time that I once had.

Omg I'm tired just reading all you do ! So true though the more time I give the better I play Keep on Chessing Joe 😉

Thanks Neil, and I'll add to it because what clashofpawns now has in her profile completely aligns with the conclusion I drew; when I finally started seeing for myself where playing too much at once can do harm. I mentioned about work and everything, but there was a time where I was going for cheapo tactics, at the expense of proper development. Of course, one reason was because TA would do his blitz Q sacs or not develop and win against his opponents. But, that was not the only reason. Going for an obvious threat that was easy to drive off was also affiliated with me feeling overwhelm due to how much I was playing at once. At the time, I had, about 30 games in progress and having fast time controls of about 18 minutes per move with all 5 bars lit was consistent. That was having the need for me to clear out everything ASAP to avoid losing on time. I stopped going for cheapos, but I was still making obvious mistakes, though and rushing because of it. So, when I came to my senses about not being to digest anything, I cut back. I wasn't in tournaments, but I was, however, participating in league and ladder matches which I left. Then, I gradually, took about several months, to get down to about 10 games which was, originally, recommended by my mentor. As a direct result of what I went through, I changed one rule on my team which most captains don't have. I don't require people to be available for team matches. And, as a result of this thread, I posted it on my team, as I'd rather see someone not be available for a team match then to lose because he or she got overwhelmed with too many games, at once.
