Best way to use puzzlesWhat's the best way to use the puzzles? There are thousands, how can I choose which ones to look at and is there a way to avoid repeating puzzles I've already looked at? best wishes, Nick |

Hi Nick...Chess tactics take positions from real games, or at least that might easily arise from real games. I believe you can set the playing level from fairly easy to pretty hard. The chess tactics challenges you to find the best, most effective move. Not all lead to checkmate; many lead to a material advantage or the unavoidable threat of mate. In these positions you will often find a move that will win, but 'fail' the challenge as there happens to be an even stronger move available. Blitz Attack uses the Chess Tactics positions, but here you have 5 minutes to solve as many as you can. I generally 'do' at least one session each day. The positions used here are generally not at all hard, but there is the time factor. On the other hand, if you do well, you get awarded stars that 'gives' you a start at the cost of some time. You can gain or lose stars depending on you performance. You will see positions, themes and motifs recurring. I don't know how often I've run across Legal's Mate in these sessions. That's no bad thing: it goes to familiarity. The Chess puzzles are 'mate in so many moves'. I'll generally 'do' the 'Easy' puzzles, but the 'Hard' ones only if for any reason the position interests me for some reason. That occasionally happens. I have an idea there is a club that 'specialises' in puzzles, often the retrograde analysis type. Cheers, Ion |
