Rarely, I'll see some sort of thematic move or combo that won't be played right now, but I want to make sure I keep in mind for the future. Also, if there's a key game that I know we're following, I'll keep a link to it in my notes so I can more easily reference it as we move through the opening. |

As chessnovice points out, conditional moves mean that often notes are not needed; for example, if the danger I have to watch out for is just one move ahead, well, I might as well punch in a conditional in case he plays the danger move, rather than make a note telling me to play it. The majority of my games have no notes, it's just the ones that are tactical and tight that I need more focus on that tend to get notes. |

Notes,I love them, but I really wonder if someone reads them once in a while besides myself...if you know what I mean?! |

I usually never admit this, but I actually prefer somewhat weaker "riskier" type openings that have a notoriously higher probabilty of moving out of book quickly. Then to me,this is more appropriately a "true"slug fest of tactics in unfamiliar "murky waters" between the two opponents.Someone may,for example,be better at (or have better memory or records at some opening Ruy Lopez line),and gain an "edge"in the opening, but is that player, even if he wins, truly a superior player? In my book, not necessarily! That is why as white I love the Trompowsky which moves into uncharted waters many times or the Sokolsky which can have similar tactics that move out of the known lines quickly. As Black,my actual favorite opening against 1.e4 is .....g5,the Basman Defense. While weaker than a "boring"2000 year old Ruy Lopez line response or a Sicilian response,it has special value to me that creates tactical and other positional patterns on the board that few players ever come across and many times my opponents will lose to me when I play the Basman, especially in blitz.I have a few examples in my GK games, but you'll have to find them! One may ask, well then..."why do I not play more of these type of games?"Well,I answered that above....those openings on my level make it "riskier"to play, but not necessarily "riskier"to lose...but draw(on my level). And draws willl slowly eat away at my rating. Yet,I still prefer a good Tromp. or Basman game once in a while.Thats in my notes somewhere too! |

T/A This is easily done ...All you need to do is set up a MiniTournament Thematic for such a position. IF it needs to be done so that one player who sets it up has not "studied" the odd start, then it could choose between a few certain moves by toss of dice, or having each player select what Piece or Pawn moves next and another player pick where it moves to, etc. For the first 1/2 dozen moves or whatever. How about 1.a3 c5 2.b3 d6 3.Bb2 Nf6 4.e4 e6 for a start? |

Baron,It would be a test of inner tactical strength with both players. But even though the idea of the mini tourney is a good one,it would only represent a tiny insignificant # of players to prove the "ultimate test"and not the bulk of players on GK for example who use the lines as a safety rope most of the time.See the difference? |

Many players would THEN see how well they "would not"do without assistance and the better player they "thought"they were would fizzle out....atleast many times.Theoretically then perhaps,on a much wider band of players losing, those players can analyze where they went wrong and improve their tactical and positional skills in ways they never considered before...under a totally different scenario of random wild chess. The personal improvements would perhaps be on a much larger scale. But thanks baron, perhaps I will start an unrated mini tourney one day...but would perfer atleast 100 players in the tourney! |
