We finally got the originally riddle rather than my 4th hand paraphrase. Or at least have a "2nd telling" of the story now. I think it may well be the Mike original phrasing from spymaster, since it was so soon after the event.
Ok I can think of many amusing niks now, for the scatologically minded in particular, but of course it is a family site and Mike a family site kind of webmaster. (whatever happen to "sysop" ... does anyone still recall that one?)
I like the suggestion re eating of words, mrmarmalade. Another thing ... Mike did not specify that the Nik is in English! What if it is in Russian, or Finnish ) for that matter. Is it thus a trick-nik?!

It seemed to me that the stronger one's opponents at GK get, the more likely it is that he/she is a premium subscriber. Since I already had the necessary GK public data (by looking into Skip's original question which this thread is really about, sorry for the hijack) I also had a look at how strong the relation "premium membership / rating" really is and the result is amazing - to me at least.
Since a picture is worth 65662 words (well this particular one is) I have put it on my profile for the benefit of those interested. I threw in the actual current GK rating distribution curve at the same time. Feel free to copy it while it is posted in my profile, algol.

People seem very much to stay where they do well ... What a strange concept~! Strange to me that is. I stayed with Chess because I was so BAD at it. Starting otb at 777 and not winning a single game till one in my fourth tournament. Likewise, GK is the lowest corr Chess rating I've ever had. (Perhaps its a Chess neurosis ?! Oh well. Is still fun to do. I guess I do prefer "complex" play !?! Please do feel free to groan at such awful pun)

The best players must put a lot of time in chess and are more likely to be premium members but I did not expect the correlation to be that strong.
Strange is that towards the bottom there is a rise too, you can see that in the 600-800 rating range in the graph, but it actually goes on below 600. For better readability of the tiny plot I did not include ratings below 600 (where 50% are premium members as you can see) but that trend goes on to 75% and even 100%. It looks a bit like the 'bathtub' curve.
I suspect those are people who get overloaded and throw all their games but are still in the active list because the event happened less than 90 days ago. Overloads may be related to playing too many games and one needs to be a premium subscriber to have many games...
I also wondered why there is a dip in the distribution at 1350. I think that there really is no dip there but that the percentages for the rating classes 1200-1300 are higher - related to the different rating mechanism for new players - which makes 1350 look like a dip... Just a guess, I could check by removing the players with few played games from the distribution computation.
ccmcacollister did I not read somewhere that you are trying to preserve your OTB qualities? That means you can not go deep in the position due to duration restrictions and have to put a lot of trust in your intuitive assessment. That puts you at a disadvantage, especially against higher rated players. The decline in your rating curve started when you selected higher rated opponents...

I am not sure Mike would not object to giving that number directly - although it is derived from public information and can easily be estimated from the graph. But let's give it this way: "Vermenigvuldig je huisnummer met honderdtachtig en tel hier zestien bij". Of course that is only the active player list part.
While checking my processing code I saw that there was at least one 'bronze' pawn around. You can admire that rare object here hogbendesciple. It looks close to the silver one but you can see the difference by looking at this one for instance bobscales

No problem, it was just a matter of letting the program run overnight to get all the data. Once the data is in Excel, it is extremely easy to extract the answers, I used a VBA script to write out the names and format them. So there is little manual work involved.
Besides, it was fun because I had never tried any 'data mining' on the Internet before. So, thanks for the question!
