That does
sound like an interesting Book Tactical_abyss . Would like to see it myself. (For the humor & the creativity of the player ideas; not that I Need Any [that I could not think of By-Myself, lol ~! ] ...but most here have heard by now, I try to be a consumate Rule Follower in Chess, even to the point of moving a Touched Piece whether my Opp saw it happen, or not.)

Yes,order the book sometime, its cheap and still available on some of the used book sites.
With the one exception of the college prank,i'm trying to stay within the forum string that I started regarding "gripes against LEGAL chess behavior".For example,in that OTB case, twisting the piece alittle is not illegal,or cannot be proven to be illegal, especially if it is very random! For corresp.play there are,of course, many other examples for justified gripes,as already discussed earlier in this string. But i'm all "strung out"for the moment!

Oh boy ...
My last post reminds me of something - I - did that was within the Rules, but Bothers Me and so now I wish I had not.

Coming close to Time Control in the Final Round, my opp & I began to repeat position. I don't recall it as actually FORCED, but probably someone would lose material or position, if they did not repeat.
After 2 or 3 repetitions my Opp said, "Draw" ; Me, I repeat move again to Decline ... Opp "You want a draw? !", Me "No Thank You", ( Refusing what was presented to me as a Draw Offer) and a few Reps later his flag would fall. I think I probably Won the tournament from receiving that Time Forfeit win.

The point was; he was obligated in the Rules to Call a Director & make a 3-Time-Repetition-of-Position Claim. At least he must if his opponent does not acknowlege it. Then the DIR would come and stop the clocks to review the ScoreSheet for 3 Reps occurring or not. (There can be a time penalty involved if a Claim is wrong also)

At such a time, I do not like to rely on my memory of time-scramble moves, nor take more of my time, to assess such a claim made to me as a player. I was Not the DIR of that event myself [... or I would have immediately stopped the clocks and assessed it for 3xRep status, even if he did not say those words]. But as a Player only, I had no responsibility nor duty to tell him of Rules nor explain them. Yet, now I wish he called the TD. Or even that I called DIR; to assess a REP Claim. Instead I Won the tournament & feel rather bad about it all, 20 years later, since he was a fairly new player & not well versed on Rules.

But to new tournament players, ... ALWAYS ask the DIR if you have ANY Question of Rules or procedure! They will tell you, or tell you if they are not permitted to say

Do you know that it is possible for an expert in either digital or analog chess time clocks to be able to either speed up the signal on the opponents side(in a random not quite noticeable movement) of the clock or slow down the other side?
Thats illegal,of course, but I hear everything in NYC and believe it is possible. But this is an issue I won't talk about....thats terrible!?I've seen it done on a time clock at work once so people could clock out early, yet get paid for leaving on time!
Just like the eight ball or cue ball that I own when i'm playing a drunk at the pool hall down the street. It has a slightly off center weight in the center of the ball.Sometimes I sneak it on the table by scratching and bringing it up for my eight ball opponent. When he shoots for that eight ball,it curves to the left or right, and he misses.I know how to slide the cue ball in such a way that it won't do it for me.Another beer I won? Thanks!

losing position?
you know how many people have yelled at me to quit in what they call a losing position. I ignore them and win! A lost position is somewhat subjective. . . And people who are haughty and have the gall to tell me to give up are rude!

this being said
i counter the accusations that people are stalling lost positions by pointing out that the majority of people do not do this. It does happen but the rules shouldn't be changed. Most slower players just have a busy life. I can totally relate. I work 2 full time jobs and like to spend time with family when i am free. Gameknot allows me to play when i want at a rate of speed that accommodates for problems that may arise. It may keep me away from the computer. The reality is that if you agree to play at the time i have set you really are being rude when i am not moving fast enough for your tastes. If you dont want games that are long don't play me thats fine . This site is great because it accounts for all playing styles.

Yes,that is correct nathanman,
Take all the time you want to move...thats what corresp chess is about. And players forget that there are other factors invoved that may easily still win you the game, regardless of being down a major piece or more.Your opponent may time-out or blunder. It even happens on the master levels.Examples?Sure!Take my recent game with poepjerviken which you can check out.He is rated at 2358,only a few points away from being a senior master. He meant to move his Bishop to d7,I believe but instead moved it to b7 and I immediately took it.Game over in 17 moves!Motto?Yes,he did resign, but the point i'm trying to make is that he could have also been UP MATERIAL on me without that blunder later in the game and misplaced a piece just as easily later on and by me later in the game taking his misplaced piece,it could have evened up the game!

I also just played another game with zidarunicolae. He timed-out in that game.See,there are all kinds of reasons to keep playing!Plus, mates are not always as easy as just that, simply because my opponent is up a Knight.I just agreed to a draw recently with my game with Merlino and I was "up"2 pawns in the endgame.Thats alot of point value in an endgame(especially on the master levels) and many players consider it a won game with 2 points.Infact,I played on quite alot before agreeing to a draw. Some players might have asked Merlino to resign, but I know better than that! You can easily check that game out as well.

In blitz on this site,I want to remind many of you how I purposely "sac"a major piece in the 3 minute zero increment game...a Knight,Bishop...sometimes even a queen!I get all kinds of name calling or players asking me to resign.Hmmmmm...thats funny, even with queen sacs by move #3 I still win about 90% of my games either by eventual mate or my opponent timing-out!Resign,me?Just being 9 points down?Ridiculous!Prove you can beat me in 3 minutes with my queen in your possession, without timing-out!Overconfidence is usually fatal!

ahhh...
and one more fact with the "abyss"'s secret knowledge through experience....
Did you know that there is usually a much "higher frequency"of timed-out games and slightly higher degree of blunders during the Christmas and New Years time of the month? So do not resign in December, even if you are down that Bishop!Your opponent may time-out or blunder during that busy rush holiday season, higher pressures, stuck in rush hour traffic if he is a last minute mover(and end up timing out!) or he had alittle too much Christmas "cheer" when he moves in your game, resulting in an increased probability of disaster!
How do I know all this?Well, after being a member of most major chess sites,USCF and postal games since the late 1960's...I feel I may know a few things you guys have never dreamed of!

Best,
TA....and Happy New Year!

My games against poepjeruiken (a misplaced piece blunder by a master)close to Thanksgiving time(not Dec,but still a holiday time!)....turkey= tryptopan which can make you sleepy tired! and a timed-out game(by zidarinicolae ,master) on that Christmas "holiday"time of year!

Coincidence?Hogwash? With masters and those masters have either no past time-out % or only a 2.8% time-out rate?

Proof?None, well not absolutely conclusive BUT I have statistics based upon thousands of games and from looking at my past records covering decades of games,i'll base my opinions on my evidence, circumstantial or not.

Laugh all you want, but again I say never resign games between Thanksgiving and New Years!
Since your opponent may very well blunder or time-out during that time of year!
And if your opponent is playing 50+games at one time and it is Christmas time....well,then you have an even HIGHER probability of opponent mistakes!!!!

Best,
TA

Just a note of importance
The likelyhood of traffic accidents/holiday fractures from hanging lights(indoor or out!)and family disagreements to the point of fights breaking out......... QUITING A GAME THEN????? Ya kidding me right? I would have to be an outright abuser of spiked eggnog in order to quit in those temporary time frames. Santa himself would most likely timeout!!! I also forgot the unfortunate...... the players who get mugged.....tragedy for them!

I won't criticize players for not moving on the weekend
I know of one player who normally moves fast but will not move on Saturdays for religious
reasons, and I have absolutely no issues with this.

nathanman, my frustrations are with people that move fast for the first XX moves, then they get in a losing position and then move slowly. Also, where tournaments state for fast players please, and then you get people that let the time go down to 1 or 2 hours even on their first few moves which are normally pretty easy to do. Everyone plays at different speeds, and at different levels, but some people just hold tournaments up meaning less games going on that there should be. I am in one fast tournament where everyone has played 18 games bar one player, that lets the clock go down to 4 or 5 hours on every move. Even when he is white and having first place. I would never ask people to quit, I am known to make silly moves in a winning position, but I would ask people to move at their normal speed.

kansasjayhawk,
I certainly do not "criticize"players who do not move on the weekends. But what I said above was more of a subliminal suggestion to move, atleast once in a while. Most players that do not make atleast one move on the weekend are doing so because they realize that their clock has had 24 hrs added late Saturday, not because of "religious"reasons.Plus there is Sunday as well.In addition,I know of no religion that "prevents"or is against chess to be played as recreation, even if it "is" a day of "rest".Again, players can do as they please, but some players simply stop moving on the weekends like a machine and it is the "law" that they MUST stop.
I'm a devoted Roman Catholic.I also am single, spend time with my lady friends, and do all kinds of travel on the weekends, clubs at night, staying up till 5am and sleeping on Saturday till 2 PM!Yet,i'll always find some kind of time,or make time to do atleast a chess move.Maybe not every game, but again,a move or two dosen't bring "God" sending lightning bolts down on me!Ha ha!If I have 50 opponents and not one of them makes even 1 move on the weekend,I would never say anything,or criticize them, its their "legal chess behavior".Opinions and thoughs are also "legal"chess behavior as well, even on my side!
