Feedback please?
Not sure if many of you know, but GameKnot was originally started back in year 2000 as an online games portal ("portals" were all the rage at the time). Hence the name -- GameKnot. However, it quickly grew into a website for correspondence-style chess, mostly because we've decided to concentrate on one thing and do it exceptionally well, instead of trying to keep our fingers in many pots at the same time, so to speak.

Let's be frank, GameKnot is far from the best name for a chess website (not to mention it is hard to tell someone the name over the phone or in real life without having to explain the silent "K"). So, long story short, we are considering a new name. And before we do a site-wide poll, I'd like to get a detailed feedback from the most insightful and loyal bunch (i.e. you!). Could you please post here if you like or dislike each of the following names, and most importantly, why? (e.g. cool name, hard to spell, easy to remember, sounds too much like a ..., too generic, reminds me of ... (good or bad), etc. etc.)

1. Chess Colony
2. iChess
3. Chess Peak
4. Chess Squared
5. GameKnot

Your feedback would be most appreciated!

my two cents....
Here is what immediately comes to mind for me when I hear these...I am trying to take these as if i just heard them from my friend on the street and didn't already know about GameKnot.

1. Chess Colony - why do I think of pilgrims playing chess?
2. iChess - this one I like the best, since it seems like things starting with "i --" seem to be well-recognized now (possible tip o' the hat to Apple for that one) as well as associated with technology-related items. So you have that, plus chess. It works. And, it's the shortest of all the choices, so easiest to remember.
3. Chess Peak - "Peak"? Not sure the relevance of that. I think of chess on top of a mountain. Maybe one would think it's like "Chesapeake", but maybe that is a stretch....
4. Chess Squared - again -- I am not sure the relevance of the "squared" part, and therefore harder to remember.
5. GameKnot - not relevant to chess. (of course I know the site is, but if you had never heard it before, you would have no idea it is chess)

a question....
Can we offer up other URLs as suggestions (e.g "www.thebestchess.com") if we check to see they are not taken, or do you just want feedback on the ones you offered?

Yes, let's focus on the feedback about the 5 names above, please. If it turns out everybody hates them all, we'll figure something out.   We are of course always open to suggestions, but please send them privately at this point. Thank you!

iChess
Agree with knightnothorse's comments. iChess is also my preference. Might be confusing with the iPhone application under that name...

GameKnot has name recognition
When I tell all my chess playing friends that I play on-line at GameKnot, most are familiar with your site. If you change your name you might lose that "buzz". I have always wondered why you chose your name, and from your explanation I infer that GameKNOT refers to a hole (portal) in a piece of wood!? Obscure, but it does make you stand out.

"iChess" might get you sued by Apple, "chesscolony" is easily confused with another chess site named "gamecolony", "chesssquared" has too many "s"es. I vote you stick with what works and keep "GameKnot". You could even register the name "GameNot" as in: "Chess is NOT a GAME, but a way of Life" and alias it to GameKnot as a little inside joke.

Another funny thing about "GameKnot" is that your site is not blocked by my company's I.T. department! (Not that I'd ever play chess from work, especially since my company's I.T. department has a strong dislike for me and would love to see me fired!   All the other non-work related sites are blocked, but for some reason the name GameKnot has slipped through the cracks.

All of these five names are bad. I can't come up with anything better than the silly "ichess.com" though.

Oh, I forgot to ask: what will happen to all your "GameKnot" merchandise if you changed your name?

In all cases, a domain name like austinfilmfestival.org is not the way to promote a chess website

keep original name

new name
Definitely not ichess! Apart from Markb56's commet about being sued - I say keep it original!

If we can't keep the original name I like ericaalders suggestion of Chessknot - keeping part of the original name but making it more relevant at the same time.

If it has to be one of your five suggestions then I'd be happy with Chesscolony, that's the URL I always use if I have problems accessing Gameknot.com

I mabe new here , but Gameknot has a nice sound to it , and how do we find it if you change it .

How do we find it?
I'm sure that the administrators would probably send us an email, and also automatically redirect us from gameknot.com as they would still own that domain name.

Without
being to nostalgic (have been here since July 2001) I would vote for the original Gameknot, but wouldn't mind if it was changed to the suggested Chessknot.

That "knot" has a kind of flavor over it right!

Best wishes

If you were starting out new or if it hadn't been such a success, then Gameknot would not be the choice.

But you have created a Brand name with it. You have a tremendous following with it. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

Re-branding now would be a huge mistake in my opinion. My two cents are worth something. Lately, my business has been helping other people build their own profitable websites.

Keep Gameknot...especially since you are expanding into other games. Yes, I noticed that. I'm sure others have too. Focusing on chess first was a smart idea. It worked. Now fix the blitz section of the site.

Name change...?
I do not like changes....

Raider is changed to Twix
Crispy is changed to Lays
Prince becomes the Symbol
Casema is changed to Ziggo

It is like Shell changing name to Just-petrol because the name says more about the thing the do then shell. Needless and pointless...

Gameknot is good if you search for chess you will find gameknot...

so my idea is to keep Gameknot and come up with several good alternative domain names and redirect those to gameknot..

www.gkchess.com
www.globalchess.com
www.chesster.com
www.wwchess.com

I can go on and on with these names..

www
Just to add confusion to the mix......

I access this website through work (even poodles have to work in recessions!) via www.chesscolony.com

What's wrong with using chesscolony.com ????

Not real crazy about the new 3 on List. And since ....
There is already a route here via chesscolony.com it seems like keeping that and dropping GK just eliminates a route to bring people here? Does it cost much more to hold two names or something like that?
I like GK ok, or Chessknot but that leaves the silent k.

How about adding some word that would climb high on a google list for that word (as well) from people who google you for a Chess site. Something associated. some demographic you could draw from who would be pulling their own interesting and see "oh Chess" ? Like a lot of programmers play Chess. Or retired people. etc.

Maybe you already do that somewhat eh, like brainblitz and filmfestival, kidschess or whatever it is, etc?

ChessPeak, ChesSpeak, CheSSSpeak looks a bit confusing, being a pun ...

I guess there is always, Chess&GirlsGirlsGirls. Ok I'm joking but there is a lot of matrimony on this site }8-)

Of course the gameknot.com domain will always remain. I can understand the main name being changed though. Nothing wrong with that...

ichess
iChess gets my vote. Its easy for prospective new recruits to remember when you tell them
where you play online.

GK already owns the domainname "iChess.com" (if it didn't already then I'm sure a web-squatter would have it by now), so worst case "iChess" will end-up being like chesscolony.com and redirect you to gameknot.com.

And what about all of GK's existing merchandise? If GK decides not to change its name then I think I'll buy an official GK coffee mug to celebrate!

As far as I know there is no specific "GameKnot merchandise" - cafepress.com offers the same things with different prints. www.cafepress.com

Thank you!
Thank you for all your feedback, very much appreciated. It seems iChess is coming out on top so far (as we expected, to be honest). Yes, we do own ichess.com (since 2005). We still need to talk to a lawyer specializing in trademarks, but I don't think Apple can claim any rights to it -- it's not like they own the letter "i".

If we do decide to go with a new name, it will be completely transparent to everyone -- all links and bookmarks will seamlessly redirect from gameknot.com to the new domain name, so no worries there...

Hi
Before you launch the "new" website, upgrade the Blitz, please.

i
iPhone, iPod, iTunes, ... all related to Apple, everybody has his iDea of apple. Lot of people love it,... lot of people hate it. Doesn't matter which side I belong to, but I think you will stop a big part of the "apple haters" from clicking your link when they get a list in google or any searchengine.

I would keep the original GAMEKNOT or maybe CHESSKNOT.

changing the gameknot name...
personally i would keep the gameknot.com name but you are right that it should have a more chess name flavor so people can find/indentify it easier.
i was reading several of the posts and two names seemed okay though:
chessknot.com (seems okay)
gkchess.com (also decent)

My 2 Cents
GameKnot or ChessKnot (I really, really like the last one!).

To GameKnot_com admin ... of course iChess came out on top of the new ideas. The others were DOA!

ichess not so bad. But, I did have this one other idea ...
Maybe if site names are cheap, GK should just add one for Everybody!?
Chessmates for sailers and singles seeking marriage
Chesssquares for us nerds from the 60's
GMChess
ChessToday
GMChess.NOT actually Chess dot not has a kind of ring ...
Galchess
CoolGuychess
ChessDudes
and
iAMsecretlyPLAYINGchessATworkBUTtheyWILLneverBANthisURL~!.com ??!
***
And then there are less left for the competition to use! Too bad it can be " .Chess " tho ... It would be cool to have an entire DOT extension to yourself. Maybe if it were ChEsS it could be Registered ?!! }8-)
Then again, ichess is not so bad
