Gameknot Database, individual games?
Hi!

Wondering if it`s possible to look at individual games in the Gameknot Database? I mean in an ordinary chess database you can scroll among all individual games in it and look closer on any individual game you want look at, and play through them move for move? But this is maybe not possible for the Gameknot Database?

First of all, the databases have not been updated for several years, not since the new owners took over. You can, however, still request your personal database be updated.

Each move in GK's chess database is stored as FEN positions, and only when there is one game remaining having a given FEN position does it then give you a link to an actual game. This is very a clever way to store a chess database, however there are downsides: If a branch gets down to 2 FEN positions it can start looping back on itself ad infinitum. This looping occurs in less than 5% of games, but perhaps this is your problem for whatever line you're examining?, otherwise keep clicking deeper and you'll eventually reach an actual game which you can then reset back to the first move and replay it move by move.

What I wish is that finished games in the database not show the computer analysis (CA) which means you're now using computer assistance in evaluating a particular line. I suggested to Mike (the previous GK owner) that CA not be shown in the database. I also suggested that the person that requested the CA be allowed to delete the CA. However, since Mike is gone these changes will never get implemented.

There's a limited database
gameknot.com

It's description: This is a database of 4,046,380 chess games played online on GameKnot since 2000. Only games between players rated 1600 and above are included in this online chess games database. Unrated games, games that ended by time-out or in less than 10 moves are excluded. It can be used as a chess opening database or an opening book.

There's also the chess openings database.

GK player database no longer getting updated
Mike (the old owner) used to update the player database every 4 months or so. Since the new owners took over it's been more than three years since the last update occurred which was on or about June 21, 2021. Yes, there are better databases available elsewhere on the Internet, but I liked the GK database to observe what the current "fad" or current popular responses to certain openings are here on GK.

The new and the older days....
I never check the GK player database or opening database...only look closely at any upcoming opponent past game history, seeking weakness's and strengths in their other games which I then use as a tool to prepare my strategy against the player coming up.As to opening databases....GK's is simply lousy on my level of play. Many of their "lines"are limited and extend only one half of other databases and of course, have not been updated for a long time.
I have 3 custom opening databases. One custom designed by a GM friend of mine from NYC,
another special polyglot book and Hiarcs which anyone can purchase at a moderate price tag.
The thing about Hiarcs is that it is updated every 3 months!!!So,that alone shows you the difference between GK and a VERY GOOD opening book. Now,on the beginner to intermediate levels of chess players,GK is fine or for those who do not have much $$ to spend on a more serious opening database. But its NOT for me.

And let me add.....
The new owners remind me of a group of rich CEO's who buy a business like a large supermarket, but are relatively "unfamiliar"with how a supermarket or a chess site runs or how to treat the "smaller"and close knit chess community on a more personal basis. They do not fill their"food isles"as they once were, attuning to the wants and desires of the members and shoppers and really are "in the dark"as to how to run and operate a chess site. They may be "big"gaming giants as has been mentioned with other forms of entertainment, but are kind of in the dark with a chess site to give it that "personal touch"that Mike gave it for years.Profit over quality in the case of Enthusiast Gaming. In other words....they think "big",but forget the little guy.Am I really wrong?I do not think so,regardless of any "small" and tiny improvements made over the most recent years. And I will go as far as saying that any improvements made, were probably a "footnote with instructions"made by Mike before he left GK!When they do not answer questions or respond or even carry a glimmer of hope with this site(as of yet),then the magic of this site is swiftly beginning to dim.I stay here, but I am very inactive since the good old days.I even tried to cancel my account once, but as a life member, the automated computer response told me that life members cannot cancel!! So,I guess,I must ride the ocean with holes in the ship, until it sinks one day.The positve thing to say is that at least the ship is still afloat! And of course,as has been mentioned in other threads,GK IS better that other chess sites.I have always maintained that thought myself to others. But when many of the members here that have been here for as long as the early 2000's like me,start complaining with many issues...then you know that the "lobster"is getting cold.

For how long the GK ship exists, may be a different story.I come back to GK to tune into my old and classic Pop music with Sandra in my profile,a few blitz games and then go back to the beach! The good old days when Mike was her are now becoming a distant memory. But of course,it could be much worse if the ship does sink and many of are forced to go into a canoe with paddles, instead of a motorized ship.

Best,
TA
