Please let us hide pictures of opponents in settings
I just don't like to see their faces, and most of the time it's not even that. So, for this reason and also to save energy, why don't you make it possible in the account settings?
huvawa

no one forces you to look at them
juniorrj

Nevertheless it's disgusting for me, it gets in my nerves, please respect that. And besides the site uses resources to display the images, so why not save that and my nerves?

Hubert,my friend...how are you?
Juniorrj new on GK,so he does not understand. You and I do however. Most premium members like you and I usually post pictures, whether it be a scenic one or a face pic. Many free members like junior do not want to post a pic,or perhaps cannot post?I am not sure, because I was never a free member here.My profile is a face, but the face is not mine, just a biography of someone else.Plus, who would want to object to a beautiful face staring at you like Sandra?Ha ha!Perhaps psychologically she may appear to be crushing opponents to death on the chessboard(through me),which some men may hate?If so...good!

But in all seriousness, one can simply transfer their game to "another"personal chess board off to the side by many techniques and not deal with any photos, then just revert back briefy to the GK board.I tried rolling the top of the screen down to hide any pictures of others, but it did not work.
And in blitz, one is always looking at the opponents pic, along with their non blitz rating.

juniorrj....
GK will never have that delete pic option you suggest, because it is part of the premium package allowances permitted and appreciated by most on GK.In my opinion it is YOU that needs to respect others and their pictures, not the other way around. In addition, never once since 2005 have I ever heard of anyone getting on their nerves due to a posted picture...unless it was an offensive pic of some kind, which THEN I could understand. So it is YOU that needs to get over it.
Take a "chill pill" or again transfer your games to another online chess board.
Also...supporting this site and not being a free member would HELP out GK with their "resources"as you mentioned above,so do not complain as a free member with anything.
Be glad they even allow you to play on GK as a free member.

Another chess server, which I won't mention, has an option to show or not show players flairs. Is that disrespectful? Anyway, who would know each other's configurations? I'm sure no one would complain about having that option (except you, maybe?).

juniorrj..
It is not me "complaining" or trying to"circumvent"some kind of "nerve issue" like you.
I been on GK for years and know that they do not need to "save"resources with pictures that most actually prefer. You would be the extreme exception to the rule, unlike others.

I made a suggestion above and also gave my input on free members like you.
Saving resources by you shutting off and a million others NOT shutting off a pic?Ridiculous.
It does NOT matter what another "chess server"has. How does that saying go?
"When in Rome"....dress like the Romans.Funny how you try to say that "I"am complaining and I am not at all complaining...you are,not me.So do not place a complaining finger towards me...
that is hilarious and I am turning blue with laughter.

Your suggestion must be allowed, but the reality is,is that you are the only one on GK that I have ever heard of nerve problems due to pics.Perhaps put some tape over the top of your screen to block out someone's pic? That might work!

Have a nice day.

Please don't start a feud. It's probably my ugly picture you're complaining about.
pop_queen_legend
08-Jun-25, 05:57

No feud Mark.
Just trying to enlighten a free member about the reality of GK and i did make suggestions above from a separate chess board. But when someone tells me that I am complaining...,well,that is absurd.I do complain about trolls and other things as you well know, but never a picture!Your pic is a bit ugly however! Ha ha!Just kidding!

But Mark...
An ugly pic only gives me an "incentive"to destroy my opponent even quicker and get him out of my sight!Ha ha ha!But see...juniorrj is writing about all pictures, good or bad due to a "nerve issue".Neither you,I or GK can help that or accomodate that issue. What other chess sites do,is no concern on GK as you well know.I respect all suggestions, but some suggestions I can already tell you are like trying to steer your balsa wood canoe into a tsunami wave.Clicking off someone pic is not going to save resources, unless most on GK do that...and THAT is not going to happen.
Its called:Reality. Even hubert(above huvawa) who is one of my best friends on GK mentioned:
"no one forces you to look at them".And even that could start a feud?Since the response was....
"repect that",which has nothing to do with "respect" in the first place.I could go on and on.
But I usually do not even respond to free members...so I am out of here and will allow others to have the floor. If you want Mark,I will delete my posts as you know I have done in the past.
I respect your opinions...well most of the time!

Best,
TA

and juniorrj...
Welcome to GK!Sorry for your nerve concerns, just trying to actually solve your issue and can only tell you that Pic options will never be able to be erased in the "settings".I am NOT saying that your suggestion is a bad one, just not going to be implemented for a hundred reasons.Never heard that suggestion before.Good luck!!

I am not complaining, just opening the door of reality for you as a new member.
Its my "'wake up and smell the coffee"way of chatting.Hope you do well on GK
and let my old club help you out(now closed) with some chess theory enlightenments:

I was called:deeper insight at that time. And yes,I do have deeper insight, but some do not like it!

Both Mark and Juniorrj...
Mark:Time to change that cereal bowl pic!!Your getting on my nerves!Ha ha! I must have changed my pic about 50 times since 2005!Gross Mark! But I still love it and it would never affect my game play!!That cereal is far soggy by now!

juniorrj: My pic of Sandra should perhaps appease you.But since we will never cross swords on the chessboard, you have nothing to get nerves about.Do you know that in Brazil Sandra was worshipped?

Yes,both in Brazil and Venezuela...at least in the 1980's and 1990's and part way in the 2000's according to my personal records and music video's in Brazil which I could post, but not here.

Perhaps before your time,but nonetheless,Take a look:

www.google.com

Just some historical FYI.But who wants to look at a beautiful international Pop Super Queen
while playing chess?I would, but perhaps others not.Its all relative and actually a moot point.

Take care all,I am out of here.

Au revoir,
Joe

I think I’ve been here for about 20 years and this is the first and only time I’ve seen such a request. I believe GK usually listens to popular and, of course, reasonable requests.

On this site, there may now be rare occasions when I will post a picture of myself wearing absolutely ridiculous fancy dress.

I always knew that "pop queen legend" Joe is a very wise man. Like him for many reasons. Always respectful but straight to the point. I am glad that there is a reaction on the complaint. I am on Gk since about 2003 before as hubtom and never hurt something like that about a picture. Isn't it about chess in the first place?

Hello my good friend Tim and appreciate the comments Hubert
You both are also very wise and insightful.
I actually try to stay out of the forums for a number of reasons that both Hubert and Tim are aware of.Once in a while I do return, but rarely. This might be my last post for a very long time.
Getting my ship ready for July.

As always,I agree with you both 100%.Pic's have even increased in popularity for a number of reasons on GK.They were smaller at one time as you know and the avatars have changed from different to the same, but all in all... a pic represents a kind of symbol of the user.Sometimes for fun like Mark or sometimes for music like me and a red dragon for the Welsh Flag for Tim.And Hubert with his wife at a resort,if I remember correctly?Nice!
I actually enjoy looking at any pics others post in their profile which ends up on my game board.A pic holds a thousand words and sometimes you can instantly tell much about the poster, just from one photo!
It can also reveal a players weakness's and strengths...but that is a different story!

Techically,I would find it "boring" to stare at a blank/gray knight pic that appears when a regular pic was not posted. So,while the original poster in this thread is certainly entitled to ask GK to create a new pic option in the settings, that is as you said... never been asked for in the past that I can remember. So,as you said..that option would be unpopular. But with all the now popularity of pics/photos,that theoretical settings option if it ever came about...would not save any resources on GK and be seldom used, unless perhaps someone is on ignore but must continue on with the game.

Now bring back different avatars or more improvements in the blitz areas...that is a far better
request. But if I remember correctly, having different avatars was using up more GK memory(?)
than they wanted,so they changed the format...but by how much really? Its still 2 identical pics, not one pic.

Nice to hear from you again Tim and Hubert!
Its cloudy today in St Barth but a balmy 30 C,ocean temp 28.2 C

Best,
Joe

Joe, seeing Sandra is always a sight for sore eyes. It's good to you both again. Yes, the cereal is getting soggy and I might change back to my cat picture.

myrydin, I look forward to seeing you "wearing absolutely ridiculous fancy dress"

My complaint is that one's avatar and picture used to be two separate uploads. Now if you change one you change the other. A good avatar should not be so tiny that you can't make out the detail, but this makes a poor picture. And if you have a picture with a lot of detail then when it's shrunken down it makes a poor avatar. Please bring back separate uploads for the Avatar and the Picture!

pop_queen_legend
08-Jun-25, 14:21

Yes Mark...
I mentioned that above(about avatars) but in a different way.
I forget, but there was something GK stated about two different avatars and I forget the reasons why they stopped it..perhaps you remember?

I was just joking of course about the soggy cereal.Post whatever you want because it is fun!
Above, hubert mentioned about ..." Isn't it about chess in the first place"?Yes,that is true
and why my past club was much more important as a true gold standard than other clubs that rarely even include chess in their threads, but many times too much trouble and controversy.

As to only chess,it not just that of course, because we all share experiences, photo's,PM's and more, which is part of the fun, learning and GK experience. So Mark...shove all the cherrios in my face that you want, while Sandra stares at you!Hell..my music is not appreciated anymore like it was in the 1980's/1990's,but I still tune into Sandra(and others)while crushing many on the chessboard or in the blitz room!I was in Germany a year ago for a week and her music was
still played in two places I visited!I smiled deeply.Germany is not all about beer and Polkas!!

Au revoir,
Joe

My picture of Charlie-the-Cat is back. Sadly, Charlie died in 2023 at the ripe old age of 18, but his eyes can still pierce my opponents' psyche and render them helpless!
