Sort of like tossing your money out of the top of the Empire State Building... 102 stories up,to give to the people below on the street, right before you jump? |

without a parachute.....As to the glass around the visitors gallery....yes,but if there is a "will" there is a way!If one can somehow get "above"the gallery on to the roof,(steal the maintanence key?)well....... V V V V But of course,170 pounds diving off of 120 stories would hurt someone below, alot more than a bag of quarters!?? Ha,ha! V V V V |

Personally, Or it could be that someone does not want that line that beat them to show up in the GK d-base of games and have everyone playing it, especially if used in a number of other games. They may have figured it better to timeout the loss rather than delay and delay it to keep it off the d-base until those other games finished, or passed the crucial point. If I see a shower of money coming off a skyscraper, I run the Other way ... unless its $100 bills, at Least /// }8-D |

It really had nothing to do with a lost position or any other d base reason, line ect. Some players simply get fed up with certain things,or tourney rules they do not agree with and simply do not care about anything at all and quit.Sometimes its a personal problem at home, even a death in the family and they know that they will not feel like playing for months or years and simply giveaway their games. Some return after years to GK or other chess sites but under a different handle name and different computer.Explanations are sometimes not given due to personal natures or sometimes they are...like in spoofee's profile at the bottom. As to someone jumping off any building in NYC...i've actually witnessed this more than once in my life. No,not off a skyscraper, but off of fairly high hotels.I hate to tell you this, but for every person that gasps or screams at such events in NYC,there are a good number of other people that look up,and beg the poor soul to jump and laugh while munching on a hot dog. Sometimes begging the poor disturbed person to jump is what actually saves him.He gets mad because he thought everyone would feel sorry for him,and many times the "opposite"occurs...so he crawls back into the building..getting mad at the people below!Of course this probably wouldn't happen in Iowa....selling hot dogs at such events simply seems uncivilized to me! |

I have what is called.."gallow's humor" and try to lighten the mood about various chess situations using a "gallows analogy" situation.I am a seasoned player, playing since the mid 1960's and I have been in every type of situation possible in chess, both OTB and corresp. Just let the cards fall where they are.If you want to consider it a "won"game due to a time-out,then go for it!Would I count it as a win?Yes!I'll take any points I can, even if it is stealing them through a time-out or quit after move #3!Good!Thats the way to feel!Never be concerned about how to write it in your records. If you gain even a half point for any chess situation...wonderful!No guilt whatsoever! Infact,I wish both spoofee and googol would have timed-out for me....i'd celebrate with a Beamish beer! |

Timing out tens of games or more in many cases is bad form. They could have simply resigned those few that were left once a final decision to leave was made. The drop in rating points would have been far less significant. Often I have observed just the opposite. A player will expand to his near maximum GK game limit before leaving. The resulting drop is 10 times greater than if done with a little tact instead. It can get so extreme that some people seem to compete for the greatest rating drop through timeouts! Or perhaps they want to feign death or serious injury of some sort. This is simply an excessive form of passive aggressive behavior. They are not negatively affecting anyone except themselves. Regardless of specifics, extreme numbers of consecutive timeouts from people still alive generally show a little immaturity on their part IMHO. This is especially true if they did in fact have a revelation through an epiphany. |

But some players feel better timing-out than officially resigning. Those players timing-out many games feel that it gives the other opponents sort of a hollow victory as opposed to an official resignation from a senior master...and indeed it does many times. They are saying to themselves,"I care not anymore,i'm going to turn my back and never look back".So they fling their games away and points. Its easier sometimes to do nothing and walk, then to click that resignation button, atleast in a psychological way.Like I said in so many words above...."chess suicide" can take on many forms, and the "jump"is easier sometimes to some players by not leaving any wills...the will in this case being an official resignation. Right or wrong, thats "reality".So when they land "down"in the battlefield,I might as well take their boots, wallet, money, gum and tobacco(chess points)...they won't be "needing them"again anymore! |
