tactic 50852
I'm reviewing the solution and just not getting why 2... Qa1. Not that I'm seeing anything obviously better but giving up the queen here doesn't make sense to me. Can someone provide me with some insight... thanks.

It isn't possible to look-up a tactic's problem by number (unless heinzkat knows of a way, or if one includes it using the "t c = 50852" code). Here is the tactics problem that hortstu refers to: tactics #50852

Wt has two threats after his Kh2 .
One is 2.Qxg6+ or the other is 2.Rxf7so if no black move were made it is:

2.Qxg6 fxg6? 3.R+ Kh8 4.R+ Kg8 5.Rag7# or if the Q is not taken then 2... Kh8 3.Rxf7

Now this could be delayed more cheaply than a Q gift by 1...Ra8-a7 by bl. But the other threat still applies then. 2.Rxf7 Rxf7 3.Qxf7+ with mate in one. Or 2.Rxf7 RxRb7 3.Rxf8+ Qh8# for eg.
Lacking a move to directly defend a critical square, BL attacks Wt Q directly and is thus taken only to divert the Wt Q from its mating duties briefly.

If no BL move were made then 2.Rxf7 threat also wins, even quicker. Its just my method to look at things holistically, usually starting with the lesser lines. This is not good efficiency in otb play, but once served me in postal. I like to understand things fully when there is time. Then they take less time when seen later ... um, in theory that is. heheh. (If you ever see someone in severe time trouble, squirming like they sat on a BenGay patch ... that can only be me, since Sammy Reshevsky is gone now. RIP. On the bright side, I found I Can make 20 moves per minute in a R+P ending   )
