Retro Table Top Chess Computers, Still a big Fondness!!?I do not have any posh chess software and hearing how advanced they play would probably find them demolishing to play?! It's more pleasant to play against these retro chess computers as you get a game equal or compatible game to your own playing strength with a half decent chance of winning, also whats great I think is playing a game on a piece of nostalgic history. ANYONE ELSE GOT ANY RETRO CHESS COMPUTERS, Be great to here you share your thoughts too!! |

1.The Tasc R-40 which only a few were made, compared to the Tasc R-30. The R-40 ran close to 2400 in rating, while the R-30 was about 2300 in rating. You could,of course, lower the rating strength if you wanted as well as the playing styles like aggressive,GM,club, out of book and more. This is a photo of the R-30.The R-40 looks the same, but the chip is upgraded. Touch sensors on all four corner of each square.Real wood board with separate controls. Each piece has a special coil sensor which communicates to the board while you make your moves. One must be very careful, for the co went out of business decades ago and if you drop a piece and even one piece does not work,it cannot be repaired and the whole machine is ruined. Using another chess piece from another R-30 or R-40 will not work either!Because each piece is progammed for that specific board!!!! It is a big collectors item.I remember paying about $3,600 dollars for the R-40. The R-30 went for about $1,900 US dollars: www.ismenio.com 2.The famous 6126 Phantom Chesster Eyeball: www.ismenio.com This is another one of my prize collections, very sought after. It moves its own pieces when responding and chats to me with comments both good and bad about my moves. Its about 2100 ELO.Lots of options and playing adjustments. In my opinion, whether any later chess machines had stronger ELO's,these two are probably the top sought after machines dating back to the early 1990's.I would not sell either of these two fine machines at any price. I have many more in my large collection, all the way back to "Boris in a box" like here: www.chessprogramming.org One of the very first chess computers to come out.I think it has a top rating of about 1300. Came out in 1978!Its not worth much, but I never part with one of the "originals". |

But see, there was a later chip sent to all owners updating the ELO from 2274 to about 2300. The original plug in chip was a 2.2. The later chip was a 2.5,which also included a much larger opening book.I keep the older 2.2 chip for nostalgic reasons.Again, the R-40 already had an advanced chip and bigger opening book, giving rise to about a 2400 rating which,at the time, was huge for the technology.Tops, until 2004.Made in the Netherlands. |
