Anyone on GK use or read the old MCO chess books anymore?Sure, chess theory has changed much since MCO 12 thru 15 came out a long time ago. But the MCO series has improved my game to much higher levels, that is,if one takes that reference book seriously and explores the storylines and subvariant lines, combined with other "tools"with new opening books(like Hiarcs),then does deeper analysis with some strong chess programs. It takes time and patience and buring the midnight oil. Interesting enough, one can even learn some cool descriptive notation as it was years ago from MCO-12 which was written in descriptive notation. Way too many "new players"on the chess scene, scoff at almost any paperback book and would toss MCO to the side.Yet,I can tell you many true stories of the GM's and IM's who still cherish that book. That alone, should prove something. So,when I hear something like...."ahhh MCO is just a reference book and no more".That is a statement usually made by a chess player who is not very strong and has much to learn. There is many ways to learn by reading "between the lines"and not just looking at the "surface"of a book, calling it boring because it does not offer a lengthy biography of the GM's like other books or online reads.Getting down to the nuts and bolts is much better for improving your game, rather than reading a 2 inch history book of a GM from 100 years ago. So,I was just wondering if anyone still takes a peek at any of the MCO by Nick anymore? I still do and Nick has helped me CRUSH many a GK player! Its all how you use a tool and not just skimming over the book. TA |

I have hundreds of software opening study books from Polgar and many others GM's.YET....I STILL go back to MCO many times to check on "something"Nick had commented on decades ago.Value comes from those who interpret MCO and look at it as a tool much deeper than a simple reference book. That is why,out of 2000 books, including many chess biography's and autobiography's....MCO is placed to the far left and #1 on my long shelves of books and software and DVD's. |
