Problem with the Modern Defence
Advice that I have read on strategy in the Modern Defence tells me that White should not be allowed to place a piece on d4 (eg., Nd4) or c4 (eg. Bc4) otherwise my defence will fail. If my Modern Defence starts 1,e4 g6 or 1.e4 d6, how can I possibly prevent 2.Bc4 !!?

Where did you read this advice? The variations with the Bishop on c4 is referred to by Chernin and Albert as the "paper tiger" of the Pirc. A bishop on c4 is hardly to be feared in the Pirc or Modern.

Bc4 in The Modern
1. e4 g6 2. d4 Bg7 3. Nc3 d6 4. Bc4 e6 This serves to blunt the attack of Bc4.
