Queening a pawn leads to checkmate after Ne8+ (discovered check). So the solution would have to be d8=N (underpromotion) which attacks the dangerous rook on f7 and thus eliminates the mate threat. Am I even close to the solution? Though what I fail to see is, why this is only a draw? |

Looks like you figured out something close to a draw,but I still see black having an edge there,with your solution. Well,I haven't really analyzed everything in this puzzle,I picked it out of the USCF magazine.
