A Tale of Two Checkmates May I firstly state that Coach Ion deserves a double standing ovation! 1. His rating got past 2100. 2. He did it by achieving his second High Draw against the Master Mater! If anyone draws or better still wins against the Master Mater please see me and I will give you a virtual George Cross Medal! If only, because, guess what, I got Freddied yet again. Here is Part 1 of a Tale of Two Checkmates. An ignominious defeat I have just lost a game to Nuntar (Michael) - I was busted by move 17 but played on a further 16 moves or so. The story was - he was 3 clear pawns up by move 17 and virtually forced exchanges into a K & P ending. This is a good lesson on how to win these endings. Anyhow, Michael will have the privilege of annotating the game as he is very much the worthy victory. One thing I will say - NxN should be given the skull and crossbones - it loses - it loses - it loses. Ah well, It's the weekend folks. Bye for now. Joanne |

I think, Joanne... For one thing, he gives 7.0-0 and then 8.Nc3 - the reverse order from nuntar's. That probably isn't very significant. But he does dislike 8...h6 - though not on account of 9.Nh7. Instead he gives 9.Nd5+ Nxd5 10.exd5 hxd5 11.dxc6 with advantage to White. Note that at this point Black dare not take the pawn that has advanced into his position on account of 11...bxc6?? 12.d4! whereat Black drops a piece. From what little I've seen based in this nuntar vs jstevens game, 9.Nh7 might be just as good for White, unless Black is prepared to play ...Rh8. I rather think the annotation of this game is going to be interesting... Cheers, Ion |

Nuntar v jstevens1 annotated game was deleted Just to let you know that the above annotated game got accidentally deleted. I may choose to annotate it again - Ion and nuntar both commented on the annotation before it got wiped off but if anybody else has any comments to make then they would be much appreciated and I may use these comments as a base for the redone annotation.
