In some sales venues being a 'friend' could actually be a problem. It might raise legal questions of favoritism and impropriety.

You hit that on the head. Government contracts are difficult sometimes. Get too close to the vendor and things go bad right off the get go.

my employer has very strict rules on entertaining and expense items when dealing with clients. I think most do these days. gone are the days of long Friday afternoon liquid lunches and girly bars.

the amount of paperwork I have to go through if my client just takes me out for a quick lunch is ridiculous - it's much easier for me to pay provided I can do so without insult.
